UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE ON


TRADE AND DEVELOPMENT

INTRODUCTION
It was established in 1964. it is the
principal organ of the United Nations
general assembly. It deals with trade,
investment and development issues.
It has 194 members
Its work can be summed up in three
words: think, debate, and deliver.

The widening trade gap between the


developed and developing countries.
The dissatisfaction of developing
countries with GATT.
Then decided to start a new
organization which will help to reduce
the trade gap of developing
countries.

FUNCTIONS
To promote international trade with a
view to accelerating economic
development.
To formulate principles and policies
on international trade and related
problems of
economic
development.
To negotiate multinational trade
agreements.
To make proposals for putting its

The major activities of UNCTAD


It include research and support
negotiations for commodity agreements,
technical elaboration of new trade
activities designed to assist developing
countries in the areas of trade and
capital.

BASIC PRINCIPLES
Every country has the sovereign right
freely to dispose of its natural
resources
Economic relations between countries
There shall be no discrimination on
the basis of difference in socioeconomic systems.

UNCTAD

commodities and natural resources
for developing countries

expand the export earning of these

group approach to negotiations with
(OCED) countries
And developing countries coming
together under the age of group 77
to co-ordinate their positions.

Role of UNCTAD
Despite the debates and
disagreements (UNCTAD) played a
key roll

preferences (GSP)
A maritime shipping code
Special international programs to
help the least developed countries
and International aid targets.

During the break down of Bretton


wood system, oil price shocks,
inflation and accumulation of debt by
developing countries
(UNICTAD) became a central forum
for debates between the north and
south.

Thus UNCTAD organization acts like a


bridge between the developing and
developed countries to increase their
economy of the country ...
