Essay #2
The Industrial Revolution was a period of time that began in 1760 and lasted until some
time in the 1820s. The most important changes that brought on the Industrial Revolution were
the invention of machines to do the work of hand tools, the use of steam, and later of other kinds
of power, in place of the muscles of human beings and of animals, and the adoption of the
factory system. This period of time is crucial to the developments that we have today.
One of the greatest inventions of the Industrial Revolution was John Kays flying shuttle.
This was a machine that enabled the textile industry to produce at a much faster pace than it was
before. The flying shuttle effectively doubled a weavers production of cloth. Another is the
spinning jenny, a device which allowed one person to spin many threads at once, further
increasing the amount of finished cotton that a worker could produce.
Coal was a necessity for the Industrial Revolution. They were used to fuel steam engines
and furnaces and as demand for it grew more and more, coal mines got deeper and deeper. To
this day, coal is used for much of energy-demanding machinery. However, there is a new source
that appears to be limitless in its power: thorium, the future of our world.
