Over the past few decades, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience as a
professional nurse. Evidence-based practice has been a staple in my career. I expect to
graduate SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Spring 2017 with a Post-Masters Certificate in Nursing
Education and begin my second nursing career in academia. Evidence-based teaching is a
parallel career path that I will follow. In addition to guiding and caring for patients and families,
I will soon help new nurses navigate the challenges they face in becoming safe and
knowledgeable professionals. l plan to remain active at the bedside, engaging in patient care
along the way. As I gain experience in the classroom, however, I will transition the focus of my
professional activities in that direction as well. Sharing real world experiences with students
can only enhance my lessons. There is an ongoing nursing shortage that can be remedied in
part by increasing the number of qualified, enthusiastic nurse educators. I hope to find a
learning institution in which I can continue to grow and learn while I help others do the same.
