Year 10 Practice harder-type questions

(1) Here is an equilateral triangle of side 6 cm. Use the triangle to

3
explain why sin 60 = 2 (No calculators allowed!)

(2)

Given that (3 + 25)2 - (3 - 25)2 =

B , find B .

(3) Notice that (3 )2 = 12 , (4 )2 = 20 , (5 )2 = 30 .

The pattern is: 3 lies between 3 and 4. Multiply 3 by 4 and add to
get 12 . Similarly 4 lies between 4 and 5, 4 x 5 = 20, so (4 ) 2 = 20 .
Neat huh?? Why does this work?

(4)

Show that the unknown side is an integer (whole number)

10 2

27

(5)
Draw an isosceles right-angled triangle with hypotenuse 8 cm.
(i)

Find in surd form the length of the other two equal

sides.

(ii)

Find a simplest surd expression for sin 45. Verify

this using your calculator.

(6)

An equilateral triangle is inscribed in a circle, as shown. What

percentage of the circles area is not covered by the triangle?

(7)
(a) What is the angle sum of a pentagon?

A regular pentagon of side 8cm is inscribed in a circle.

8cm

(b) Find the radius of the pentagon (to two decimal places)

(c) Find the area of the pentagon
