‘KUWAIT UNIVERSITY Faculty of Engineering of Petroleum (CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT Basic Principles A ( ChE 211) Home Work # 6 Problem 1: ‘The reaction between ethylene (CzHs) and hydrogen promide (HBr) to form ethyle promide (CsHsB3 is carried out ina continuous reactor. The product stream is analyzed land found to contain 52 mol% ethyle promide and 30 mol% ethylere. The feed to the reactor contains only ethylene and hydrogen promide. Caleulate the fractional conversion of the limiting reactant and the percentage by which other reactant isin excess. If the molar flow of the feed stream is 180 moUsec, what is the extent of the reaction? Problem 2: Chlorine is formed by reacting hydrogen chloride with oxygen . In this reaction water is formed as by product. Airis fed to provide 40% excess oxygen. If the fractional ‘conversion of hydrogen chloride equal to 70% then: (@) Cateulate the molar composition ofthe reactor effluent using ‘© Using atomic balance method. + Extent of reaction method, (©) If pure oxygen were fed to the reactor instead of air, then repeat the calculations ofppart a Problem 3: ‘Ammonia is burned to form nitric oxide in the folowing reaction: ANHs + 502 > 4NO+ BHO (a) Calculate the ratio(tb-mole O; react-mole NO formed). (0) If ammonia is fed to a contiquous reactor at a rate of 100 kmol NHyfh, what ‘oxygen feed rate(kmolh) would correspond to 40% excess 0:? (6) 180 kg of ammonia and 100 kg of oxygen are fed to @ batch reactor, determine the limiting reactant, the percentage by which the other reactant isin excess, and the extent of reaction (mol) and mass of NO produced (kg) if the reaction proceeds to completion. Problem 4: ‘The following reaction is carried in a continuous reactor and allowed to proceed to equilibrium: A+B C+D ‘The equilorium constant of this reaction atthe reactor conditions equals to, Kk, 22200088 Jae Perform the following: (@) If the feed to the reactor contain equimolar quantities of A and B and no other species, calculate the equilorium fractional conversion of A (6) If itis desired to produce 100 moth of C stating with 120 moth of B + How much A must be fed tothe reactor? + What isthe final product composition? (6) Itis desired to produce 250 moth of C starting with 200 moth of B, how much A must be fed tothe reactor? Recommended problems to be read and solved from the Book ( Not included in the home work).
