Cell phones are an important commodity in the present world and the number of cell phone customers all

over the world is growing each day. Rapidly emerging new technology of cellphones prompts consumers
to discard their old phones which do not match up to the technological features of newer cellphones
available in the market, thus contributing to the growing e-waste. Thus an effective end-of-life recovery
strategy must be developed. Product exchange is one of the end-of-life recovery options available these
days. It is aimed towards getting a used product back from the customer, offering the customer a service
in return.
The research study focuses on cell phones as a case study for understanding features of various existing
product exchange programs. Different cell phone exchange programs currently existing are studied. The
significant factors of the exchange program were determined to be the age of the cell phone model,
memory size of the phone and the phone carrier. Industries can also design their products or modify their
exchange programs in the future accordingly in such a way that their recovery from consumers is more
profitable and convenient to them as well as to the consumers and reducing the production of e-waste.
