The composite wall of an oven consist of three material, two of them are of known
thermal conductivity, kA = 20 W/m.K and kc = 50 W/m.K and known thickness. LA = 0.3 m
and Lc = 0.15 m. The third material B, which is sandwiched between material A and C is
of known thickness, LB = 0.15 m, but of unknown thermal conductivity kB.
Under steady state operating conditions, the measurement reveals an outer surface
temperature of material C is 20oC and inner surface of A is 600oC and oven air
temperature is 800oC. The inside convection coefficient is 25 W/m2.K. What is the value
of kB.
An industrial freezer is designed to operate with an internal air temperature of 20 oC,
when the external air temperature is 25 oC. The internal and external heat transfer
coefficients are 12 W/m2.K and 8 W/m2.K. respectively. The wall of the freezer consists
an inner layer of plastic (k = 1 W/m.K.), 3 mm thick and an outer layer of stainless steel
(k = 16 W/m.K), 1 mm thick. A layer of insulation material (k = 0.07 W/m.K) is
sandwiched between these two layers. Find the thickness of insulation to reduce the
convective heat loss to 15 W/m2.
The inside and outside surfaces of a hollow sphere of radii r1 and r2 are maintained at
constant temperature T1 and T2 respectively. The thermal conductivity of insulation
material varies with temperature as k k0 (1 T T 2 ) , where ko is constant. Derive
an expression for heat flow through the sphare.
A plane wall is a composite of three materials A, B and C. The wall of material A has a
heat generation at the rate of 2 106 W/m3. The thermal conductivity of wall A is
190 W/m.K, while its thickness is 50 mm.

(b)

Estimate the diffusion rate of water from the bottom of the test tube 1.5 cm in diameter
and 15 cm long into dry atmospheric air at 25C. Take diffusion coefficient of

The engine oil at 25oC is forced over a 30 cm x 20 cm plate at a velocity of 1.5 m/s. The
flow is parallel to 30 cm side, which is heated to a uniform temperature of 55 oC.
Calculate the rate of heat transfer from the plate to the oil. Take the following physical
properties of oil at 40oC.

Explain Ficks law of diffusion. What is mass diffusivity? What is its dimension?

The water in a 5 m 15 m outdoor swimming pool is maintained at a temperature


of 27C. The average ambient temperature and relative humidity are 27C and
40%, respectively. Assuming a wind speed of 2 m/s in the direction of long side of
the pool, estimate the mass transfer coefficient for the evaporation of water from
the pool surface.

reduce the heat loss or (gain) through the wall by 80 percent?

(b)

A mild steel tank of wall thickness 12 mm contains water at 95C. The thermal
conductivity of mild steel is 50 W/mC, and the heat transfer coefficients for the inside
and outside the tank are 2850 and 10 W/mC, respectively. If the atmospheric
temperature is 15C, calculate :
(i)

The rate of heat loss per m2 of the tank surface area; and

(ii)

The temperature of the outside surface of the tank.

Q.9 (a)

A thick walled tube of stainless steel with 20 mm inner diameter and 40 mm outer
diameter is covered with a 30 mm layer of asbestos insulation (k = 0.2 W/mC). If the
inside wall temperature of the pipe is maintained at 600C and the outside insulation at
1000C, calculate the heat loss per metre of length.

(b)

A spherical shaped vessel of 1.4 m diameter is 90 mm thick. Find the rate of heat
leakage, if the temperature difference between the inner and outer surfaces is 220C.
Thermal conductivity of the sphare is 0.083 W/mC.

Q.10 (a)

In a counter flow double pipe heat exchanger, water is heated from 25C to 65C by an
oil with a specific heat of 1.45 kJ/kg K and mass flow rate of 0.9 kg/s. The oil is cooled
from 230C to 160C. If the overall heat transfer coefficient is 420 W/m 2C; calculate the
following :
(i) the rate of heat transfer,
(ii) the mass flow rate of water, and
(iii)the surface area of the heat exchanger.

(b)

The effective temperature of a body having an area of 0.12 m 2 is 527C. Calculate the

A ship is 80 m long and 12 m board and has a displacement of 14715 kN. When a
weight of 490.5 kN is moved 5 m across the deck it inclines the ship 6 o. The moment of
inertia of the section of the ship at water plane about its fore-and-aft axis is 60 per cent
of the moment of inertia of the circumscribing rectangle. The centre of buoyancy is 2.5 m

Q.6 (a)

107.91 kPa and at the lower end is 53.955 kPa. Taking f = 0.032 determine the discharge
through the pipe.

(b)

The difference in the water surface levels of two reservoirs which are connected by a
siphon is 8 m. The length of the siphon is 600 m and its diameter 0.3 m. Assuming
f = 0.02, determine the discharge when the siphon is running full.
If the summit of the pipeline is 5 m above the surface level of the upper reservoir,
determine the maximum length of the inlet leg for the pipe to run full. Allow for all the
losses and assume the permissible minimum pressure at the summit of the siphon to be
