‘The'Ideal’ Lab Report ‘They see me rollin’: Determining g on an Incline Purpose: ‘The speed and acceleration, of a cart rolling down an incline, will measured using a motion detector. Then a mathematical relationship between the angle of ineline and the acceleration of the cart will be determined. From this, the value of free fall acceleration, g, will be determined by extrapolating the acceleration vs. sine of track angle graph. Lastly, the validity of extrapolating the acceleration vs, sine graph will be determined. Procedure: The materials used in this lab were a Vernier Labquest, a wood ramp, a dynamics cart, 2 meter stick, § books, and « Vernier Motion Detector. First, connect the motion detector to the DIG/SONIC I channel of the Labquest and set the motion detector to Track. Next, place a single book under one end of the wood ramp so it forms a small angle with the horizontal. Adjust the motion detector to the distance the cart travels down. the ramp, x, is as long as possible; preferably 1 to 2 meters. Start the cart about 15 em from the motion detector as seen in figure 1 Click the “collect” button to start collecting data and release the cart after the motion detector starts to click. Make sure the hand releasing the cart is removed from the motion deteotor path as quickly a possible. The motion detector may need adjustment so it ean detect the cart the entire length if the ramp, Practice releasing the cart while the motion detector runs. It may take multiple trials before a constant slope of the velocity vs. time graph is achieved. Use the Labquest to determine the slope of the velocity vs. time graph. Highlight the region of the graph to be analyzed. Click the analysis button then click the graph and finally cliek linear regression to find the slope of the graph. This is the acceleration and record in a data table. Repeat the data collection and data analysis two more times. Measure the length of the incline and record in the data table. Measure the height, h, of the book in meters and record in the data table, These two measurements will be used to determine the angle of the incline, Raise the incline by lacing a second book under the end. Adjust the books so the distance, x, is the same as the previous reading. Run three trials for the new inclination with a second book. Repeat the three trials for a third, fourth and fifth book placed under the ramp for a total of 15 runs, Data and Analysis: Data Table 1 cat _ Acceleration Number | Height | Length | Sin(@@) [Trial | Trial2 [Trial 3 | Average of books | of of (mis*) (mis’) | (m/s?) _| acceleration books, | incline, (ms*) hom) | x (m) 1 i 1.0 [0.0326 | 0.063 | 0.062 | 0.066_| 0.063 2 1.0 [0.0652 [0.307 [0.210 [0.207 |_0.208 3 0.0978 | 0.357 [0.366 [0.356 | 0.360 4 0.1304 [0.506 [0522 [0.515 | 0514 5 0.1630 | 0.685 [0.685 [0.685 | 0.685 Sin(0) = opp/hyp = h/x = 0.0326m/1.0m = 0.0326 Average acceleration = (trial 1 + trial 2 + trial 3)/ 3 = (0.062 m/s*+ 0.062 m/s*+ 0.066 m/s?y/3 ,063 m/s
