Origins
The country of my origin is Italy. Most of my family emigrated from Italy to America.
The rest of my family either came from Ireland or Germany. My mothers side of the family is
where my Italian influence comes from. Before my family came to America, our last name was
Canova and now it is Marrone. My grandfather was originally from Pettingo, Italy (Marrone).
Italys flag is made up of three colors: red, white, and green. This specific flag has a lengthy
history. At the beginning of the formation of Italy, it was invaded by many tribes such as the
Lombards. After the invasions, various people were crowned emperor like Charlemagne and
Charles I. In the 1700s the French Revolution took place and Napoleon defeated the Austrian
rulers. As we continue to the 1800s Napoleon broke up Italy into individual provinces and
kingdoms. In the 1900s World War I occurred and Italy joined the Allies. This led the fascists to
name Mussolini the Prime Minister of Italy. As the 1900s progressed, Mussolini sided with
Hitler. However, this as short lived because Mussolini was shot. Finally, in 1946 Italy established
a republic. Throughout this long history, the Italian flag changed considerably. The first place to
use the Italian tricolor was the Cispadane Republic in the late 1790s. Then the Cispadane
Republic and the Transpadane Republic came to together to form the Cisalpine Republic. This
flag was a vertical tricolor flag. The flag the changed again in 1805 when Napoleon took control.
After this, the Italian flag went through many changes because of the many changes that
occurred to the country during the 1800s (Italian Flag).

The National Anthem for the country of Italy is the II Canto degli Italiani. The person
who came up with this is Goffredo Mameli, a poet. The anthem was written in 1847. The story of
how the anthem was made is not 100 percent conclusive. It is said that Mameli gave the anthem
to Michele Novaro. Novaro was the musician that composed the music (Italy).
