School and Community Events

To promote prevention of substance abuse, I created two school events to help students
learn about the consequences of drugs. It would be extremely beneficial to create an event with
parents, students, and staff and bring in multiple guest speakers. The D.A.R.E program is
substance abuse prevention education; this worldwide program was founded in 1983 in Los
Angeles (D.A.R.E). Starting from kindergarten to 12th grade, police officers educate students on
how to avoid peer pressure and substance engagement. Having police officers and speakers
teaching students and staff about the effects of substance abuse would be the next step in creating
a better future. The D.A.R.E program puts real life situations into perspective and creates a better
picture for students.
The second event I plan to implement is for my school to host National Prevention Week.
Students, parents, and staff will be involved in creating a community event regarding raising
awareness, behavioral health issues, and implementing prevention strategies (SAMHSA). This
national event is on May 15-26 and the reason being is because due to studies, percentages of
substance engagement increase. Because it is important to teach students about this world wide
phenomena, creating our own prevention week would be beneficial to expose students to the
reality of engaging in drugs.
