PRESENT PROGESSIVE

USING :
The present progressive expresses an activity that is in progress at the
moment of speaking. It began in the recent past, is continuing at present,
and will probably end at some point in the future.

PRESENT PROGRESIVE
Present progressive give idea, the tenses say that an action is in progress
during.

S + is/am/are +
Ving + O
Example:
She is sleeping right now.

That sentence means that she went to sleep at 21:00 tonight. It is now
04:00 and still asleep. She sleep began in the past, is in progress at the
time, and probably will continue.

USING PRESENT PROGRESSIVE WITH ALWAYS

(a) Mary always leaves for school at


7:45

In sentences referring to present


time, usually the simple pesent is
used with always to describe
habitual or everyday activities, as
in (a)

(b) Mary is always leaving her dirty


socks on the floor for me to pick up!
Who does she think I am? Her maid?
(c) I am always/forever/constantly
picking up Marys dirty socks!

In special circumstances, a
speaker may use the pesent
pogressive with always to
complain, i.e., to express
annoyance or anger, as in (b).*
In addition to always, the words
forever and constantly are used
with the present progressive to
express annoyance

*COMPARE :

Mary is always leaving her dirty socks on the floor


expresses annoyance.
Mary always leaves her dirty socks on the floor is
statement of fact in which the speaker is not
necessarily expressing an attidue of annoyance.
Annoyance may, however, be included in the
speakers tone of voice

RUNNING TEXT

It's eight o'clock in the evening. The Shamir family is at home.


Mr. Shamir is watching TV in the living room. Mrs. Samir is in the living
room, too. She is sitting on a chair and she is reading a book. Little Orit is
on the carpet. She is playing with her toys. Yaniv is in his room. He is
working on the computer. He is doing his homework. Dafna is in her
room. She is talking on the phone with her friend Sigal. Poncho, the dog
is running after Zizi, the cat, in the yard!Good night to the Shamir family!

Why does the text use present progressive tense?


Because at the first line of the text, we can see the time signal (its eight
oclock in the evening), so we know that all activities in the text happen in
the present time. Thats why the tenses used is Present Progressive Tense
