Major Triads
A major triad is composed by the root (R in the diagram), the major
third (3) and the perfect fifth (5). Here are all the possible major
triad configurations on the fretboard. If you memorize all these
shapes (and the other triad forms) you will become able to take a
given chord in every position and every string of the fretboard. You
have just to identify the root note and place fingers on the
fretboard in the propers shape.

Minor Triads
A minor triad is composed by the root (R in the diagram), the minor
third (b3) and the perfect fifth (5).

35
Augmented Triads
An augmented triad is composed by the root (R in the diagram),
the major third (b3) and the augmented fifth (#5).
35
36
Diminished Triads
A diminished triad is composed by the root (R in the diagram), the
minor third (b3) and the diminished fifth (b5). The diminished fifth
is also called tritone or the devil's interval (diabolus in musica),
because its "evil" sound. If you are into heavy metal you know what
I mean.

If you want to take a C7 chord, you have to take as root note the C.
As previously said, the root note in the diagram is marked with a
circle. So, in order to take a C7, the root note has to be a C, that on
the A string is placed on the 3rd fret.
With the same logic, if you want to take a D7, you have to start
with the root note on the fifth fret of the A string (D).
