What We Know About the Health Benefits of

Fruit
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away," goes the old saying. Our great-grandmothers were
aware of the benefits of fruit long before medical science joined the bandwagon. The health
benefits of fruit are many. They are more than just a rich source of vitamins.

Digestion
Most fruits function as natural laxatives, helping regulate the body's digestive processes. They
provide roughage and fiber that is important in helping the body eliminate waste.

Protection From Illness

Fruit contains important vitamins that your body needs to stay healthy. Oranges and other citrus
fruits, strawberries and many other fruits contain vitamins C, A and E. These vitamins are
important antioxidants. They protect your body from the damage caused by free radicals.

Newly Discovered Phytonutrients Add to the Benefits of

Fruit
The bright colors of many fruits are another reason why fruits are so beneficial. The pigments
that make blueberries blue and cranberries red are called phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are
extremely powerful antioxidants that protect your body against cancer-causing free radicals.
They may also slow down some of the effects of aging.

Coffee Health Benefits : Coffee may protect

against disease
February 2006
Its surprising when something that was once considered questionable for your health turns out to
have health benefits, usually with the proviso to use it in moderation. That happened with
chocolate and alcohol, and now it is coffees turn, reports the February issue of the Harvard
Health Letter. Heres some of the mostly good news about coffee:
Blood pressure. Results from long-term studies are showing that coffee may not increase the
risk for high blood pressure over time, as previously thought. Study findings for other
cardiovascular effects are a mixed bag.
Cancer. Coffee might have anti-cancer properties. Last year, researchers found that coffee
drinkers were 50% less likely to get liver cancer than nondrinkers. A few studies have found ties
to lower rates of colon, breast, and rectal cancers.
Cholesterol. Two substances in coffee kahweol and cafestol raise cholesterol levels. Paper
filters capture these substances, but that doesnt help the many people who now drink nonfiltered coffee drinks, such as lattes. Researchers have also found a link between cholesterol
increases and decaffeinated coffee, possibly because of the type of bean used to make certain
decaffeinated coffees.
Diabetes. Heavy coffee drinkers may be half as likely to get diabetes as light drinkers or
nondrinkers. Coffee may contain chemicals that lower blood sugar. A coffee habit may also
increase your resting metabolism rate, which could help keep diabetes at bay.
Parkinsons disease. Coffee seems to protect men, but not women, against Parkinsons disease.
One possible explanation for the sex difference may be that estrogen and caffeine need the same
enzymes to be metabolized, and estrogen captures those enzymes.

Health benefits of Almonds

Almond nuts are rich in dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals and packed with numerous
health promoting phyto-chemicals; the kind of well-balanced food ensuring protection
against diseases and cancers.

These nuts are the complete source of energy as well as nutrients. They are especially,
rich in mono-unsaturated fatty acids like oleic and palmitoleic acids that help to lower
LDL or "bad cholesterol" and increase HDL or "good cholesterol." Research studies
suggest that Mediterranean diet, which is excellent in monounsaturated fatty acids help to
prevent coronary artery disease and strokes by favoring healthy blood lipid profile.

The nuts are an excellent source of vitamin E; contain about 25 g per100 g (about 170%
of RDA). Vitamin E is a powerful lipid soluble antioxidant, required for maintaining cell
membrane integrity of mucus membranes and skin by protecting from harmful oxygenfree radicals.

Almonds are free in gluten and therefore, are one of the popular ingredients in the
preparation of gluten-free food formulas. Such formula preparations are, in fact, healthy
alternatives in people with wheat food allergy and celiac disease.

These nuts are packed with many important B-complex groups of vitamins such as
riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6, and folates. Together, these
vitamins work as co-factors for enzymes during cellular substrate metabolism.

Further, they are also an incredible source of minerals such as manganese, potassium,
calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, and selenium.

Almond oil is extracted from the nuts used as an emollient. Applied regularly, it helps
keep skin well protected from dryness. Additionally, the oil is used in cooking in Iran,
and Turkey. It is also used as carrier or base oil in traditional medicines in
aromatherapy, in pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.

Hand full of almonds a day provides much of recommended levels of minerals, vitamins, and
protein. Besides, almond oil extracted from the nuts has been used in cooking, and in medicine.
