You are required to use the finitedifference method to determine the Torque, T, and the
maximum shear stress, max, in the following sections when subjected to a rate of twist of 0.0001
rad/inch.
a) A 6 inch high by 4 inch wide solid steel bar. GSteel=11.2 106 psi
b) A 6 inch high by 4 inch wide solid copper bar. GCopper=6.6 106 psi
c) A 6 inch high by 4 inch wide solid composite bar of steel and copper with an interior
portion copper portion of 4 in by 2 inch and an outer steel portion of steel is 1.0 inch
wide.

Copper

Choose an appropriate mesh size. Try to obtain results within 10% of those given in the textbook
parts a) and b).
1. Compare your results for with the solutions given by Table 6.1 and eqs 6.64.
2. Compare the results you obtained in 1 with the closed form solutions for circular solid
and circular composite solid bars with the equivalent areas to the steel and copper
sections in the rectangular bars given above.

Use the lesscomplicated finite difference formula for the first and second partial derivative of
the stress function in the Oden and Ripperger notes are recommended for ease of use.
(Note that there is an error in the text in eq. (6.96). The coefficient of the first term should be
+2.250 and not 2.250. This can be easily checked by solving the equations (6.95).)
