Business Letter
Roald Dahl

Assignment
You must find a minimum of five of your favorite companies to write to. You may
choose game companies, food companies, clothing companies, or any other
companies for which you can find addresses.
You must handwrite each letter neatly to your company. If printing is your neatest
writing, please print. Each letter is to have a minimum of 3 short paragraphs. Each
letter must follow the given basic business letter example.
When you complete each letter, you must also address and stamp an envelope.
Everyone must use the common school address as the return address because we
will share replies with the class. Before sealing it in the envelope, you must submit it
to the teacher for grading. More than five letters is encouraged and extra credit is
given accordingly.
Businesses often reply to students with colorful advertisements and coupons. The
more letters you send, the greater your chance of getting replies.

Mr. D
1260 Anyschool Lane
Smallville, CA
January 30, 2009
Mr. Willie Wonka
President Emeritus
Wonka Chocolates
Wonkaville, England
Dear Mr. Wonka:
I appreciate your chocolate factory more than I can ever say. My family has been a
fan of Wonka chocolates for years, even though we have to have them shipped all the way
to California, where we live. This year we are taking a vacation to England. I am
wondering if it is possible for us to schedule a tour this summer.
We expect to arrive in England around the middle of August. We will be there for
nearly two weeks. Would it be possible for us to get a tour? We are particularly interested
in riding your magnificent glass elevator and in seeing Charlies latest inventions.
Please send us any available literature as to tour times or fascinating facts about
your wonderful chocolate factory.
Sincerely,
Mr. D

Similes
Roald Dahl

The Simile
A simile is a figure of speech in which two unlike things are compared by using the
words like or as.
Examples of similes:
as mad as Mr. Wonka (from as mad as a hatter)
as hungry as Augustus Gloop (from as hungry as a dog)
The policemans hand was like a wall to trafficnothing went past it.
Write three sentences with similes that use characters from the book. It should not
be hard for you to find; similes are as plain as day or as plain as the nose on your
face. Thinking of three of them ought to be as easy as falling off a log.
