Florence nightingale

By Dale Ashcroft
when she was born
• Florence Nightingale was born
on 12 May 1820, and named
after the Italian city of her birth.
Her wealthy parents were in
Florence as part of a tour of
Europe. In 1837, Nightingale felt
that God was calling her to do
some work but wasn't sure what
that work should be. She began
to develop an interest in nursing,
but her parents considered it to
be a profession inappropriate to
a woman of her class and
background, and would not allow
her to train as a nurse. They
expected her to make a good
marriage and live a conventional
upper class woman's life.
Why is she important?
• Nightingale is best known for her work during the
war, some of her most valuable contributions
came afterwards. She returned to England as a
national heroine. However, she deliberately hid
from public life and lived in seclusion where she
worked non-stop. Her first major works were two
books published in 1859, Notes on Hospital and
Notes on Nursing, detailing her views on health
care reform gained from her experience during
the war .
The war
• In March 1854 the Crimean war broke out and the
reports of the sufferings of the sick and wounded in the
English camps created anger in Britain. William Russell,
The Times' correspondent, described the terrible neglect
of the wounded, and pointed to the differences between
the facilities provided for British and French soldiers. He
asked: ‘Are there no devoted women among us, able
and willing to go forth to minister to the sick and suffering
soldiers of the East in the hospitals of Scutari? Are none
of the daughters of England, at this extreme hour of
need, ready for such a work of mercy Must we fall so far
below the French in self-sacrifice and devotedness
