SERIES RLC CIRCUITS

Experiment #7
VI. QUESTIONS:
1. If a series RLC circuit is used as filter circuit, this can be used as what type of filter
circuit? Explain why?
A series RLC circuit can be used as a Resonance/Notch/Band-pass Filter because
Resonance of a circuit involving capacitors and inductors occurs because the collapsing
magnetic field of the inductor generates an electric current in its windings that charges the
capacitor, and then the discharging capacitor provides an electric current that builds the
magnetic field in the inductor. This process is repeated continually. An analogy is a
mechanical pendulum. At resonance, the series impedance of the two elements is at a
minimum. Resonance is used for tuning and filtering, because it occurs at a particular
frequency for given values of inductance and capacitance.
2. In a series RLC circuit, the resulting phase angle is dictated by some circuit elements.
What are these elements and show its effect using equations.
The Phase Difference, depends upon the reactive value of the components being
used and hopefully by now we know that reactance, ( X ) is zero if the element is
resistive, positive if the element is inductive and negative if the element is capacitive.

Substituting the values VS2 = (IR)2 + (I XL - I XC )2

From this impedance triangle: by using Pythagoras theorem we get;

Zeq = R + jXL - jXC

XL = XC ---> Zeq = Resistive

FRIDAY 7:30 - 10:30

XL > XC ---> Zeq = Inductive

XL < XC ---> Zeq = Capacitive
When:
Zeq = Resistive ---> Zeq = R 0o
Zeq = Inductive ---> Zeq = XL + 90o
Zeq = Capacitive ---> Zeq = XC - 90o
