TET 4115: Power System Analysis, FALL 2015

Assignment 4
(Based on Lectures 4, 5 & 6 Unsymmetrical Faults)
Submission deadline: 28 September 2015
Guidance: 21 September 2015
Problem#1
In the network shown in Figure 1, Y-Y transformers, each with grounded neutrals, are at
the ends of each transmission line that is not terminating at bus 3. The transformers
connecting the lines to bus 3 are Y-, with the neutral of the Y solidly grounded and the
sides connected to bus 3. All line reactances shown in Figure 1 between buses include
the reactances of the transformers. Zero sequence values of these lines including
transformers are 2 times those shown in Figure 1. Both generators are Y connected.
Positive sequence reactances of the generators (same as their negative sequence
reactances) connected to buses 1 and 3 are shown in the figure. Zero sequence
reactances of the generators connected to buses 1 and 3 are 0.04 and 0.08 per unit,
respectively. The neutral of the generator at bus 1 is connected to ground through a
reactor of 0.02 per unit; the generator at bus 3 has a solidly grounded neutral. Obtain the
positive, negative and zero sequence bus impedance matrices for the network.

(Note: Obtain YBus by inspection for each of the sequence networks. Invert these matrices
to obtain the corresponding ZBus matrices using convenient software.)

comprehensive representation)

Problem#2
A 300 MVA, 20 kV three-phase generator supplies a couple of synchronous motors over
a 64 km transmission line having transformers at both ends. The motors are all rated
13.2 kV. The neutral of motor M1 is grounded through a reactance, the second motor M2
is ungrounded. Rated inputs to the motors are 200 MVA and 100 MVA for M1 and M2.
The three-phase transformer T1 is rated 350 MVA, 230/20 kV, with leakage reactance of
10%. Transformer T2 is composed of three single-phase transformers, each rated
127/13.2 kV, 100 MVA with a leakage reactance of 10%. Series reactance of the
transmission line is 0.5 /km. Assume that the generator and both motors have a
subtransient reactance of 0.2 pu. Assume zero sequence reactances for the generator
and motors of 0.05 pu. A reactor of 0.4 is in each of the neutrals of G1 and M1. The
zero sequence reactance of the transmission line is 1.5 /km. Draw the positive,
negative and zero sequence network diagrams of this network whose single line
diagram is shown in Figure 2. Hence obtain bus admittance matrix by inspection for the
zero sequence network.

(Note: This problem is an exercise in per unit globalization, but for various sequence
networks. To be solved on the same lines as the last problem in Assignment 1. A balanced
three-phase systems equivalent per phase impedance diagram is the same as its positive
sequence network diagram. Then, sequence networks are drawn.)
