Assignment 5
(Based on Lecture 7 Unsymmetrical Faults)
Submission deadline: 05 October 2015
Guidance: 28 September 2015
(Note: It helps to solve the problem on #22, Lecture 7, first. The problem was partially
solved in the class.)
Problem#1

(i)

Without obtaining the sequence impedance matrices, obtain the the sequence
components of fault current in per unit for the following faults.
a) A bolted three-phase fault at bus 1.
b) A bolted single line to ground fault at bus 1.
c) A bolted line to line fault at bus 1.

TET4115: Power System Analysis, 2015.

d) A bolted double line to ground fault at bus 1.

(Note: Since you are forbidden to obtain sequence impedance matrices in this part of
the exercise, you will have to rely on Thevenins equivalent impedance based on visual
inspection. (You may neglect the phase shifts!)
(Use the formulae presented in #13, 17, 21.)
(ii)

Obtain the bus impedance matrices for the sequence networks of Figure 1. Find
the fault current, the three-phase bus voltages during fault, and the line currents
in each phase for the following faults. (You may neglect the phase shifts!)
a) A bolted single line to ground fault at bus 1.
b) A bolted line to line fault at bus 1.
c) A bolted double line to ground fault at bus 1.

(Use the formulae presented in #4, 5, 13, 17, and 21 along with basic formulae
pertaining to sequence component transformations.)

Cross-Check for answers:

Problem#1:
Thevenin positive and negative sequence impedance: j0.2275 pu
Thevenin zero sequence impedance: j0.1875 pu
Problem#2:
Partial answers in pu are given:
SLG at bus 1:
Positive sequence component of current at bus 1 = -j1.5564.
Negative sequence component of voltage at bus 3 = -0.1012.
Zero sequence component of voltage at bus 2 = -0.0973.
Positive sequence component of current flowing in 3-1 = 1.0117 900
LL at bus 1:
Positive sequence component of current at bus 1 = -j2.1978
Negative sequence component of voltage at bus 3 = 0.1429
Zero sequence component of voltage at bus 2 = 0
Positive sequence component of current flowing in 4-2 = 0.7692 900
LLG at bus 1:
Positive sequence component of current at bus 1 = -j3.0277
Negative sequence component of voltage at bus 3 = 0.0889
Zero sequence component of voltage at bus 2 = 0.1037
Positive sequence component of current flowing in 2-1 = 1.0597 900
