Final Exam
Due on Friday, 12/12/14 by 12 pm

NOTE: Please write down in a clear and organized way. State all your assumptions (if any)
and describe all steps.

1. Solve the partial differential equation

F r , t
1 F r , t
a 2 r2
g r, t
t
r r
r
in a spherical domain. The boundary conditions are F / r 0 in the center and on the surface
of the sphere and g(r,t) is some known source function. Hint: substitute F W / r to simplify
the first term on the right hand side and then use eigen-function expansions to express g(r,t) and
then the solution.
2. Prove that the Dirac delta function t1 t2 in frequency (Fourier) space reads

1 2 . Note that you have two independent times t1 and t2 as well as two

independent frequencies 1 and 2.

3. Consider the nonlinear differential equation

d 2x
dx
ex f t
2
dt
dt

where f(t) is a known function and are known constants and is a constant small
parameter. Use asymptotic expansions to obtain the solutions of order = 0, and = 1.
Once you obtain the zero order solution x0 and clearly write it down, you may use the
symbol x0 everywhere in appears in the result for the first order solution x1. Otherwise
you will end up with very long expressions.
