MATERIALS AND APPARATUS

Materials:

Filter paper

Green water sample

Apparatus:

Vacuum pump

Crucible

Analytical balance

Forceps

Beaker (200ml)

Oven

Desiccators

METHOD
1. For 24 hours, the glass fiber filters is soaked in D.I..
2. It is dried in an oven overnights and the filters are ignited in muffle
furnace

for 20 minutes at 550C.

3. It is then cooled and placed into the desiccators.

4. The filter paper is then placed on filter holder attached to vacuum
pump.
5. The water sample is then passed through the filter paper and the
amount of water filtered in mL is written down(V).
6. At 103C, the filter paper and residue is dried, cooled in desiccators
and the weight is taken at three decimal points (B).
7. For 20 minutes at 550C the filter paper and residue is ignited in
muffle

furnace.

8. Next, it is cooled in desiccators and the weight is taken at three

decimal

points (A).

9. The concentration of Particulate Organic Matter (POM) is calculated

using the equation in mg/L.
POM in mg/L = (B-A)

Where,

V

B = weight (in mg) of filter paper + residue before ignition

A = Weight (in mg) of filter paper + residue after ignition
