2 THE DARK OBJECT

!Values or tones are the expression of lights and

darks in a drawing. This project challenges you to


extend your tonal range while drawing a banal
object in such a way that it appears *singular.

!ASSIGNMENT
!Draw the object you have selected in class. Fill the

page with continuous tones that range from the


blackest black to the white of the page. Think like a
realist painter. Observe the object in all its detail,
including the texture of the object and the quality of
light on and around the object.

!MATERIALS
!Strathmore sketch paper 18 x 24
graphite and charcoal pencils
Magic Rub eraser

!INSTRUCTIONS
!Hold the object in your hand. What was this object

used for? Who do you think used it before you?


Before you start to draw, set up lighting conditions
that dramatize this object. Imagine for a moment that
the page is a stage. What is happening behind the
scenes or just beyond what the viewer will see?
