About the Artifact

This Statue was made for the god of

death, Mictlantecuhtli, and was found at
the entrance of the house of eagles, a
house of worship in the Aztec Society
It was used periodically for ritual
cannibalism, it had holes in its head so
that you could place the victims hair
inside of it for the Aztec god.

Mictlantecuhtli

They felt the need to worship Mictlantecuhtli because he is the god of the
underworld and all death. He is also the King of Mictlan, the city in the
underworld, where you would be judged for your crimes or wrong-doings.

They believe that if they did not worship the god and practice his rituals, the
underworld would swallow them up, leaving everyone to suffer for an enternity.
