Prolonged

Clotting
Time
Prepared by EDALYN R.
CAPILI

When coagulation screening tests are

performed to verify normal function of the
coagulation system (Ex: preoperative,
routine examination), they sometimes
indicate an abnormality that may be
unexplained (prolonged clotting times).
Possible causes of a prolonged clotting
time include:
Coagulation
factor
deficiencies
(congenital or acquired)
Coagulation factor inhibitor, Specific
coagulation factor inhibitor
Nonspecific
inhibitor
(lupus-like

CONDITIONS THAT
CAUSE EXCESSIVE
BLEEDING:
1. Vitamin K
deficiency
2. Hemophilia
3.
Thrombocytopenia

Diseases of the Liver: Hepatitis,

Cirrhosis, Acute Yellow Atrophy
depress clotting system that patient
develops a severe tendency to bleed
Vitamin K- necessary for liver formation
of prothrombin, Factors (VII, IX, X) and
protein C
absence of Vit K, subsequent
insufficiency of these coagulation factors
in blood can lead to bleeding tendencies
In GI disease, Vit K deficiency occurs as a
result of poor absorption of fats from GIT.

Hemophilia
rare bleeding disorder in which the
blood
doesn't
clot
normally
(bleeding from larger vessels)
occurs exclusively in males
Hemophilia A / Classic Hemophilia
caused by an abnormality or
deficiency of Factor VIII
Hemophilia B / Christmas Disease
caused by an abnormality or
deficiency of Factor IX
Hemophilia
C
/
Rosenthal
Syndrome
caused by an abnormality or
deficiency of Factor XI

Thrombocytopenia
Presence of very low quantity of
platelets in the circulatory system
Bleeding from small venules or
capillaries when number of platelets
in the blood falls below 50,000/l
Thrombocytopenic purpura- small
purplish blotches in the skin
