With the evolution of humans society; commerce and technology are developing to
higher levels, which require a common language in order to globalize
communication. Nevertheless, on the grounds of conflicts and loss of cultures might happen, I oppose to the idea of a universal language. First and foremost, for the fact that there are actually several languages that are more dominant than the others, integrating in terms of communication and languages is likely to provoke conflicts. On one hand, debate about which dominant language should be chosen would rise among developed, rich nations. It is highly potential that the world war will occur for the right to be in control of the worlds. On the other hand, for less-dominant developing countries, using another language would lead to the danger of their own native language; and their identity. It is common knowledge that a language is the symbol for its identity, therefore, losing it also means conflicts, or more severely, wars will happen. The second reason is using a common language will push our world to the threat of losing cultures of tribes or societies in minor, remote areas. Generally, a language expresses the perception and the profound knowledge of its community. For instance, the ways of using terms, labelling natural food and medicine are not the same in every country. By merging languages or replacing with a common one, human-beings are exposed to new ways of perception; which can lead them to alternate their traditional one; and when passing down to the next generation, their cultures cannot be the same as before. Along with the aforementioned reasons, I acknowledge that some people might claim that a mutual language such as English is vital in commerce and science, as it is used in important documents and conferences. However, from my viewpoint, a common language should not be mandatory because not everyone can acquire it. Thus, people should have the right to choose a second language that suits their purpose of communicating, their own ability and interest. In conclusion, for fear of conflicts and culture loss might happen, it is recommended that individuals should choose a second language that fits their need and capacity. Meanwhile, everyone should be reminded to preserve their identity and native cultures.
