Instructional Lesson
Classroom: E8 Morehead STEM
Grade: 6th
Curriculum Area: Language Arts
(HONORS CLASS)
What I notice
The teacher starts the lesson with the
word of the day displayed on the board.
Conjunction
In order to effectively manage her
classroom, the teacher uses a lightly
pitch chime that focuses the students
without using words.
The teacher uses a variety of videos to
engage students before starting the
lesson on run-on sentences.
Videos:
1. Conjunction School House Rock
2. Run-on Sentences
Uses a PDF worksheet and displays it on
the board. This worksheet focuses on
identifying and correcting run-on
sentences. The teacher has encouraged
students to incorporate commas,
hyphens, and delete unnecessary filler
words.
Students corrected the grammar errors
and the teacher asked for three
students to come up to the board and
model the correct answers.
The teacher has created a google
document for each students personal
narrative. All of the students in the
class have access to one of their peers
narrative. This peer editing activity
allows students to use their chrome
books to make suggestions on their
peers document.

Methods Classes
I felt that the teacher did an excellent
job with handling classroom
management. The chime that she
would use allowed her to gain her
students attention when they became
talkative or where she when transition
into new activities.
I enjoyed watching the teacher
introduce her lesson with an old-school
video from School House Rock on
Conjunctions. Unexpectedly, the 6th
grade students actually knew all the
words to the song!
The teacher gave the students an
adequate amount of time to complete
the in class work before they
reconvened for a whole class
discussion.

the narrative. In doing so, they
will be able to check for run-on
sentences.
Students are to review their own
narrative to check for run-on
sentences and decide to accept
or reject their peers suggestions.
