different soils.
I. Performance Objectives
The third grade students will compare and contrast rocks by reproducing the rock cycle
with play dough.

A. Prerequisite skills
1. Fine motor skills
2. Knowing different types of texture
3. Students have learned the rock cycle. Students have basic knowledge
of each of the types of rocks.

B. Key Vocabulary
1. Sedimentary
a) Sedimentary- A rock that is formed by deposition of sediment
b) Sediment- mineral or organic matter deposited by water, air or ice
c) Layers- a thickness of some material laid on or spread over a
surface
d) Fossils- any remains, impressions, or trace of a living of a former
geologic age as a skeleton, footprint, ect
2. Metamorphic
a) Metamorphic- pertaining to or exhibiting structural change or
metamorphic
b) Magma- Milton material beneath or within the earths crust from
which igneous rock is formed
3. Igneous
a) Igneous- produce under conditions involving intense heat, as rocks
of volcanic origin or rock crystallized from molten magma
C. Big Idea- What are the different types of rocks and what differences can be
observed?
D. ContentSedimentary: Sedimentary rocks are made up of sediments and can turn into
metamorphic rocks.
Metamorphic- Metamorphic rocks are created by heat and pressure and can
become sedimentary rocks because of weather and erosion or into igneous by
melting and cooling.
Igneous- Igneous rocks are made because of melting and cooling of magma.
They can turn into metamorphic by heat and pressure or into sedimentary
rocks by weather and erosion.
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction
The teacher will play the video of the experiment of the different rocks, and
how they change from one to the other.

B. Development1) The teacher will play a video from YouTube.

2) The students will fill out the guided note worksheets. (See attached)
3) The teacher hand out the flipbook. (See attached)
4) Student will fill out the flipbook while watching the video. This is a
website that goes into each of the rocks and how it is created.

5) The teacher will play a video from YouTube.

6) Students will now reproduce the rock cycle with play dough (See
attached)
7) Students have a work sheet that they are asked to fill out and draw
each of the rocks as they go through each step. (See attached)
8) Teacher will give small amounts of different colors of play dough.
These small balls would represent the sediments.
9) Students will make small balls from each color then make a
sedimentary rock out of sediments balls of different colors
10) Students will gently crush and hold give off heat from hands creating a
metamorphic rock.
11) Students will now blend all play dough playing with it creating the
melting action and then allow it cool creating igneous rock.
12) While students are doing this activity the teacher will be ensuring that
the students are using the vocabulary words.
C. ClosureThe teacher will read Let's Go Rock Collecting by Holley Keller

The teacher will say, For homework I want you guys to think
about how we use rocks everyday? Look around your home on
your drive to school or a place your going and see how rocks are
being used?

D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. To accommodate Monica an ELL guided notes will be given in
her native language. So that important vocabulary will be
understood. Guided notes and detailed instructions will be
provided to all students.

E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
Formative
1.The teacher will collect the flipbook.
This will be graded with the rubric. ( See attached)
Summative
2. Test will be given at the end of the unit.
