One person that i admire on rock is Gustavo Cerati, Today I found out that he

died after four years in a coma, so I would like to write about him and his music
and why is one on my personal hroes.
I was very young when his band Soda Stereo was at its highest point in the late
80s, Soda Stereo was a band that built a rock industry in Latin America
because it did not exist before, clar that had rock in Spanish, but not at a
sufficiently massive scale. The late eighties Soda Stereo started to grow and
thats why they came to Mxico, I must say that at that time came much more
bands both Argentina and Spain and that also helped in Mxico to create a
small rock scene.
Mxico had popular singers in Latin America, but not rock, so I guess for us the
Argentine rock or Spanish rock was a mystery. Bands such as Radio Futura,
Toreros Muertos, Hombres G, Nacha Pop, Alaska, etc, meant modernity and a
break with the past imitating the kind of music that was done in America and
Europe at that time and a clear example of this was Soda Stereo.
I dont Know if imitation is god or not, i would say that Soda Soda adapted it
well, and we must remember that society was changing, this meant that Latin
America became more open and urban. Espaa and Argentina suffered
authoritarian political systems and these whole bands represented a break with
the past, so when they came here, they found an open field of business
because rock in Mxico was very clandestine.
Soda Stereo had no political content, was not kind of band, his subjects were
individual dissatisfaction, human relations, and the life in the big cities, titles
like: Nada Personal, Sobredosis de TV and La Ciudad de la Furia are
examples of this. They were really the first band of rock mass in Latin America,
for me are not the best in the Argentine rock, i prefer Charly Garcia, but as i
said before, they created an industry, making concerts, doing tv shows, using
international producers, doing greatest albums and this last aspect is what
interest me most.
The first cassette i had of SS was Doble Vida and I liked their quality, they
looked like a brittish rock band, but i understand his lyrics. After that: Cancin
Animal and Dynamo, I saw them live very times and his music accompanied
me always on my walkman, Cerati made part the soundtrack of my younger
live.
