It is my extreme pleasure to write in support of Amber Thomas, for a letter of recommendation. I
first met Amber in the Fall of 2011 as a student enrolled in the Transition to Independence Program (TIP), a college access and retention program for foster youth attending WSU. In the Fall of 2013 Amber also enrolled in my SW 3710 Social Welfare Policy Course at Wayne State University. Amber was a kind and serious student, and excelled in the course, passing with a solid A-. Amber was also employed as my work federal study student in the Spring 2014 term. Amber is currently enrolled at WSU part time, but plans to enroll full time in the Fall 2015-2016 academic year to complete her senior year. Currently Amber holds a 2.98 GPA, but has a social work GPA of 3.29. She is extremely dedicated to serving youth in Wayne County. Last fall, she volunteered to present to a group of girls residing at Vista Maria, a residential treatment center for abuse and neglected girls. She discussed with the girls the importance of college going, and shared challenges she faced in being in foster care and the transition from the child welfare system to academe. She was nothing short of inspirational! Amber has also been an active member of the TIP event planning committee, a student leadership group responsible for assisting TIP staff in planning group activities like the biannual warrior dinner. Amber has also represented the TIP program in state level meetings sponsored by Fostering Success Michigan, a statewide network dedicated to improving the education well-being of foster youth. As you can see, Amber is dedicated to increasing the education well-being of at-risk youth. She was inspired to enter the field of social work after her experience tutoring at risk youth attending school in Harper Woods. As you can see, I am very proud of Amber and her accomplishments.
