Intro/Scientific Method
1. Mark the dates of each in-class exam and the final in your calendar/planner.
2. Mark the dates of each in-class activity/case study in your calendar/planner.
3. Mark the dates for any other prep assignments in your calendar/planner.
4. Register your Clicker.
5. Register for MasteringBiology- check for assignments that are coming up.
6. Make sure you have your scantrons early! Purchase them at the bookstore, or see if you can
get one free (one per day) at the ASNMSU office.
7. Look at figure 1.3- which levels will we be addressing in Biol 211?
8. What do all the things illustrated in figure 1.11 have in common? (think of as many things as
you can)
9. We looked at figures 1.5, 1.8, 1.7 and 1.6. For each figure, what was the take home message?
10. What are the steps that are typically followed in a scientific investigation?
11. What is a hypothesis?
12. Do we ever conclude that our hypothesis has been proven? Explain your answer.
13. In a controlled experiment, what are the two groups?
14. In a controlled experiment, what is the dependent variable?
15. In a controlled experiment, what is the independent variable?
16. Why do we need to do statistical analyses of data collected in an experiment?
17. You want to know if a particular fertilizer will result in rose bushes that produce larger
roses. Design an experiment to address this. Include your hypothesis, the design, the
independent variable(s) and the dependent variable(s).
18. Review the case study on pages 12-14, and study figure 1.19.
