Box 1475 Richmond, VA 23218 Dear Secretary Moran, |As you know, there is widespread concern in Virginia and across the country about the potential resettlement of Syrian refugees in our Commonwealth, As of today, more than half of our nation’s governors have indicated they will not accept Syrian refugees due to concerns over gaps in the screening process and the possibility that terrorists may exploit the refugee crisis. Problems with the screening process have been noted by senior leaders in the Department of Homeland Security and at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. (On Monday, Chairman Tim Hugo and Deputy Majority Leader Gilbert called on the Governor to take steps to pause resettlement in Virginia due to these concems. The Governor's spokesman responded by saying “every refugee who is settled in the U.S. undergoes intensive security screening, and the governor has asked Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian J. Moran to ensure that every proper precaution is taken to keep Vi Please provide me with a detailed report ofthe steps the Commonwealth will be taking to keep Virginians safe. Specifically, please address these questions: 1. Will you conduct any additional screening of refugees beyond the sereening done by the federal government? 2. What involvement will the Virginia State Police have in the screening and vetting process? What state funding will be used as part of any screening and vetting process? Under what authority do you or the Governor have to expend funds for this purpose? 5. How will local governments and law enforcement be involved in the screening of refuugees? 6.
