Chapter 7 Basic stuff to know

1. Read over the 2 handouts , An overview of hypothesis testing and Sec. 7.1 Notes
and understand the
basic theory/concepts/terminology of hypothesis testing.

2. Know how to set up hypotheses, identify claims and interpret decisions. (Sec. 7.1)
3. There are 2 approaches to hypothesis testing: P-value and Critical Value/Rejection
Region approach.
Study the handout Steps in Hypothesis testing to know the flow of hypothesis
testing for each approach.
Also shown on this handout are the conditions when each is appropriate.
4. Know how to compute each test statistic. (You will be given a formula sheet).
(NOTE: For each statistic, except the 2- statistic, your calculator can calculate the
statistic, however, you are
still responsible for knowing how to compute.)
5. Know how to find the P-value of a z-statistic (using normalcdf). (Sec. 7.2)
6. Know how to set up rejection regions using critical values for: z-tests, t-tests and 2tests (Sec. 7.2-7.5)
7. Know how to make decisions, whether using the P-value or Rejection Region
approach, and follow that up with an interpretation.
And, finally,
8. Be able to do the whole 5-step procedure for the 4 tests, whether using the P-value
approach or the Rejection Region approach. (NOTE: You can do ONLY the Rejection
Region approach for the 2 test on ).
The 4 tests we did: z-test about when is known,
t-test about when is not known,
z-test about a population proportion, p,
2 test about
