Lesson Plans Grade 2 -3 Reading Strategy: Cause and Effect
Goals:
Students will actively use cause and effect as one of the reading
strategy.
Objectives:
Students will recognize causes and effects in the text.
Rationale:
Students will understand that paying attention to causes and
effects in text can help them to comprehend the story.
Standards: Nevada: Language Arts
ELA 4.2.3b Identify a cause and effect
Materials:
If You Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff
Paper, scissors, and pencils
Procedures:
TW introduce the cause and effect lesson.

TW review the sequence of event lesson. TW ask the students to


explain the reading strategy, sequence of events. TSW go over the
flow chart they made.
TW explain the reading strategy, cause and effect. TW ask for a
volunteer to come up. TW face the student and say, I hate you! TW
ask the students, How do you think student feel? TW explain the
cause and effect.
TW reintroduce the book, If You Give A Mouse A Cookie and tell
the students to identify the causes and effects while they are
listening.
TSW identify the causes and effects on paper using graphic
organizer.
TW will ask the students to identify the causes and effects while
she is reading.
TSW complete the graphic organizer.
TW explain the home work. TW demonstrate how to make a mini
book. TW show his/her own mini book.
Assessment:
Observe if students understand and recognize the causes and
effects in the story.
