What is Independent Study Mentorship

(ISM)?

Program offered in high school that provides the opportunity for the students
to experience and explore the career field they are interested in.

2 hours/week required for meeting with mentor

The student shadows the mentor and as knowledge is gained over time, the
student conduces all he/she learnt and make it into a product.

About Gynecology & Obstetrics

The branch of physiology and medicine that deals with the functions and
diseases specific to women, especially those affecting the reproductive
system.

The branch of medicine and surgery concerned with childbirth and the care of
women giving birth

Implantation

The process by which the developing mass gets

embedded within the uterine wall

Begins 6 days after fertilization

Placental Development

From 9-12 weeks, the uterine spiral

arteries are transformed from thickwalled, muscular vessels, to more flaccid
tubes to accommodate a 10-fold increase
in uterine blood flow to support the
pregnancy.

Final Product

Case studies about patients we worked on.

3 cases:
- Case 1: Normal placental development
- Case 2: Placenta with an infection
- Case 3: Placental chord too long

Why gynecology & obstetrics?

A mother always forgets her pain of 9 weeks of pregnancy and the surgery the
moment the baby comes out. It is similar for obstetrics doctors, we smile
when we know we brought a new living organism into this world.

Makes you realize how much pain your own mother had to endure when you
were not yet of this world.

Thank You
