Marketers are avid fans of income data for cities and towns, a key tool in their search for the most attractive communities to target.
But theyre also fascinated by ZIP code data, especially if theyre planning direct mail campaigns. Thats why we generated a separate
set of affluence rankings for 22,658 U.S. ZIP code territories with populations of 1,000 or more. Scores are based on the same 12-part formula
that covers everything from per-capita income to the size and value of houses. (An important note: A few ZIPs may be missing from our
standings because theyre too small or they lack sufficient data.)

SIX DEGREES OF AFFLUENCE

Affluence isnt simply a measure of income. Its also driven by such disparate factors as home values, white-collar occupations, education levels and sources of outside income.
American City Business Journals developed a 12-part formula to rate the affluence of 15,090 cities, villages, towns, boroughs and related communities across the country. Listed below
are local leaders in six of the 12 categories, with their overall affluence ranks in parentheses. All raw statistics come from the five-year version of the U.S. Census Bureaus 2013 American
Community Survey, the latest source of official data at the local level.

highest per-capita income (that would be our own Chevy Chase Village) or the largest houses (Piney Point Village, Texas) or the strongest mix of white-collar employees
(Ladera, California), but it does offer the best blend of those (and other) attributes. Here are the 25 leaders on our affluence scale.
