Find the change in the melting temperature of tin when the pressure increases by 100
atm. The following data for tin can be found in a handbook: Tmelt=231.9 C, Hmelt=7.07
kJ/mole, and the densities of liquid and solid tin are dL6=6.99 g/cm3 and dS=7.18 g/cm3,
respectively.

2. Find the saturated vapor pressure over carbon tetrachloride at T=60 C. The normal
boiling temperature of CCl4 is equal to 75 C and the heat of evaporation is
Hevap=45860-44.06T J/mole.

3. Estimate the saturated vapor pressure over solid argon at T=50 K. The following Ar
properties were found in a standard handbook: Tboil= -185.9 C, Tmelt= -189.3_C,
Hevap=6.50 kJ/mole, and Hmelt=1.19 kJ/mole.

4. Label each phase and the constituents of the two-phase regions on the MnSi phase
diagram (Fig. 1). Simply label each phase with a Greek letter (you can choose whichever
letters are your personal favorites) or the composition of the compound, respectively.

5. How many phases are in equilibrium at (1) T=1000 C and 10% Si and (2) T=1200 C
and 35% Si in MnSi? What are the compositions of each of the phases you identified?

6. Draw the cooling curves for MnSi alloys with 17% and 80% Si. Describe all of the
phase transformations occurring in each segment of the cooling curve.

7. Find themasses of each of the phases and components in each phases at (1) T=1000 C
and 10% Si and (2) T=950 C and 20% Si in 200 g samples of these MnSi alloys.
