Topic: Area of a
Quadrilateral

Quadrilateral
C

It is a quadrilateral.
The category of rectilinear
figures bounded by four
line segment is called as
Quadrilateral

A
B

HOW CAN WE FIND THE

AREA OF A QUADRILATERAL

First we draw the Quadrilateral

ABCD
C
D

C
D
d

A
B

Divide the quadrilateral

into two triangle by
drawing a diagonal at
length d from A to C.
Now, we get two triangle
ABC and ACD

C
D
d

A
B

First the area of two triangle

and add these areas
Let P1 be the altitude of ADC
and P2 be the altitude of ABC

Area of quadrilateral ABCD

=Area of ABC+ Area of ADC
= x d x P1 + x d x P2
= (P1+P2) d

Area of Quadrilateral
C
D
d

A
B

The area of a
quadrilateral is half the
product of the length of
a diagonal with the sum
of the lengths of the
perpendiculars from the
opposite sides

Area of Quadrilateral
= x (P1+P2) d
where d length of diagonal
P1,P2- lengths of
perpendiculars from the
opposite sides.
