If the bead was well made and you don’t drop it on a tile floor, you'll get years of pleasure from it perhaps a thousand or more. Someday an archaeologist might dig it up and say, “Wow! those ancient beadmakers were amazing.” But if the bead was poorly ‘made or improperly annealed, it might break when you are just looking at it, and you may never buy another art-glass bead. It’s difficult to protect yourself completely from buying badly-made beads, but here are some of the things you should look for and some questions you should ask: 1. How long has the artist been making and selling her beads? Long-time beadmak- ers are more likely to have ‘mastered annealing. Don’t avoid new beadmakers, though; many make fabulous beads. Knowledge is so widespread that there's no excuse for poor annealing (BEB #9, p. 23). 2. Scrutinize the bead for tiny hairline cracks. If you see any, do not buy the bead; it will break, Point out cracks to the beadmaker. His reac- tion will tell you a lot about his attitude to quality. 3. Many random bubbles ‘or scum in the glass are signs ‘but medium und large beads ‘must be kiln annealed. It is not sufficient to own and use akiln, Annealing requires that the beadmaker follow specific time and temperature formulae depending on the type of glass she uses and the mass of glass in the piece. Beads must be brought up to and held at the annealing temperature long enough to allow all the glass in each bead to reach and soak at that temperature. This releases stresses that formed when the bead was made because dif- ferent parts of it were differ- ent temperatures. Then the kiln is cooled slowly over sev- eral hours to room tempera- ture. Ifit cools too quickly, the beads won't be annealed. 6.Askhow the artist anneals his beads. How does he cool his kiln? Does he have controller that brings the temperature down gradually?
