Vote for Me A Lesson on the Process of Voting

Grade Level: Preschool


Objective: After reading Duck for President, students will vote for duck or
farmer as president.
Materials:

Chart paper
Markers
Old shoe box to use to vote
Duck for President book

Procedure:
1. Create KWL Chart
a. Ask students what it means to vote
b. Ask students if they have ever voted
for anything
i. Relate this to choosing their
drink in the morning
c. Talk about how their mom and/or
dad might talk about voting and how
they can vote for president.
2. Read Duck for President
3. After reading tell students they will have the chance to vote (pick their
favorite character) for president.
4. Model how to draw an X in the box to vote for either duck or farmer
5. Call on students to take turns voting
6. Once every student has voted bring up the box and count the votes
with the students
7. Talk about which character got the most (larger number) votes and
who got the (smaller number) least votes.
8. Fill out the L section of KWL chart
a. How do you vote?
b. Does everyone vote the same?
Assessment:
Informally assess by participation in discussion and counting of votes.
Wording may need to be changed for some students, which is noted in
parenthesis.
