On dot paper draw three triangles with a base of 5 units and a height of 4 units (one right triangle, one acute triangle and one obtuse triangle and explain how to find the area of each without using the formula for the area of a triangle. ‘To find the area of a triangle, without using a formula for the area of a triangle, one can use the area ofa rectangle to find the area of the triangle. We can piece together different areas to find the area of the triangle. This will be further explained in the examples below. Right Triangle: Using the base of 5 units and a height of 4 units we draw a right triangle. Since we do not have a formula to use we first draw a rectangle incorporating the original triangle. Then, we will need to find the area of the rectangle. You can find the area by counting the number of units in the rectangle, or multiplying the number of base units by the number of height units. We have found that the total area of the rectangle is 20. We can also see that the rectangle is divided into two equal triangles. So, the original triangle is % of the rectangle. We would divide the area of the rectangle in half and we can find the area of each triangle in the rectangle. 20/2= 10 The total of each triangle will add up to the total area of the rectangle. 10+10=20 We could also subtract the amount of the new area found from the total area to find the area of the original triangle 20-10= 10 eee eters | The total area of the original Right Triangle is 10. Acute Triangle; First we draw our Acute triangle using the base of 5 units and a height of 4 units. Then, like the previous problem, we draw a rectangle incorporating the original triangle and find the area of the rectangle. S4= 20 ‘Now, we need to break up the rectangle into smaller rectangles using the lines of the original triangle. For this triangle we will need to cut it into two different rectangles. ‘Then we will find the area of the new rectangles. Area=4 Area=16 EN Po ‘We have found the total area of the rectangles. We can see once again that each rectangle is divided into two equal triangles. We would then divide the area of each new rectangle in half and we can find the area of each triangle within the rectangle. 4/2=2 16/2=8 free} He2 Now we have the area of each individual triangle. 242 8tB= 2 or 4tlo= 20 812= 10 20~(0=(0 ‘The total of each triangle will add up to the total area of the original rectangle. 2+2+8+8=20 We can subtract the amount of the new area found from the total area to find the area of the original triangle. First we would add the two different triangles from the new area (8+2= 10) then we can subtract this from the total area from the original rectangle. (20-10= 10 ) The total area of the original Acute Triangle is 10. mm \ “We could also eliminate the subtraction step being that we already know the two different areas of the original triangle. Which are 8 and 2. We add those together to get the area of the original triangle which is 10. 8+2=10 Obtuse triangle: First we draw our Obtuse triangle using the base of 5 units and a height of 4 units. h HPI Base 5 ‘Then, like the previous problems, we draw a rectangle incorporating the original triangle and find the area of the rectangle, The area of the rectangle I 20 Now, we need to break up the rectangle using the lines of the original triangle. For this triangle we can see that a part of the area of the rectangle is % of the original rectangle. We will use the original area (36) to find % of the original rectangle which is (18). (36/2=18) The next part, we will use the other line of the triangle to make a smaller rectangle ‘Then we find the area which is 16. We can see that that rectangle made two equal triangles so we can divide the area in half, (16/2= 8) Aved= [io We 28 Now we can see that we have the area that surrounds the original rectangle. In order to find the area of the original triangle we would add the area that surrounds the original rectangle together ( 18+8=26). Then, we would subtract that number from the area of the original rectangle (36-26=10). The remaining amount is the area of the original triangle. Lae tt St lot B= 30 (Bt =2b Total Area= 20 3lo~ 2 = 10 ‘The total of each triangle will add up to the total area of the rectangle. 18+8+10=36 ‘The total area of the original Obtuse Triangle is 10.
