PREFACE Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) has been called the “father of modern orchestration” and he composed very little for the piano. In fact, the three pieces included in this collection comprise his complete solo keyboard works, The complete original title of the Rustic Serenade was Rustic Serenade to the Virgin and was composed in Paris in 1845. It is based on the same “Theme of the Roman Pifferari” that is found in the Domenico Scarlatti Sonata in C major, K513 (Longo $.3), bars 17-35. This popular theme is sung in ‘Naples and in other parts of southern Italy during the so-called novenario (Festival period of the nine days preceding Christmas). I beilieve this popular tune was familiar to Scarlatti and he found it attractive enough to use in his sonata. The same holds true for Berlioz and he expands the tune even more than Scarlatti. This tune’s charming pastorale quality has much to recommend it. For a more thorough discussion of this theme, see the articles by Walter Schenkman in the Journal of the American Liszt Society, volume VIL, June 1980, pp. 42-58, and volume VIII, December 1980, pp. 44-59 Hymne for the Elevation is the complete title for Hymme, also composed in Paris in 1845. The original title would indicate it was intended to be used in part of the catholic Mass. It's flowing linear theme is worked out in a most efficient contrapuntal manner. The Toccata, which also dates from 1845, moves with motoric steadiness throughout until the final five bars where an interesting series of chords slows the motion and brings the work to a firm close. Fingering, pedalling, and indications in parentheses have been added by the editor, ‘This edition is dedicated to Dr. Walter Schenkman, School of Music, University of Northern Colorado, who introduced me to these beautiful pieces.
