Syntax
English is a syntactical language; that means that words must be in a proper order to mean
anything.
Think of English like a house. We know something is a house instead of another building by
the types of rooms it has. A house usually has a kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, and usually a
living space or dining space. Take away any of those and you might be looking at a hotel, an
office, a school, or anything else.
Just like we recognize the meaning of a building by the organization of rooms, we recognize
the meaning of a sentence by the organization of words.
The dinosaur eats the man.
Change that order and...
The man eats the dinosaur.
But, young Jedi, to your mind, a small green sage might come. In the proper order, speaks his
words, he does not.
To Yoda, listen carefully. Certain words are in the proper order, and could not be changed and
still mean something. (Think of it like putting the kitchen on the second floor of a house
instead of the first)
That leads to the next lesson on word units.
