A three-storey building has a light pipe which brings day light from the roof to the ground floor as shown
in Figure 1. The light pipe is made by making a square hole of dimensions 200 x 200 mm in the roof slab
and in the floor slabs of levels 1 and 2. In order to avoid obstructions to the floor layout, the light pipe
was kept as small as possible. Since the area of the light pipe is not sufficient to bring in adequate
amount of light, large collectors are installed on the roof which reflect light into the pipe. Design a
control system for the collectors in order to maximize the amount of light transmitted into the building.
Explain how machine learning techniques could be used in the control.
