Foreword
Since St. Georges Park opened in October 2012 FA Learning have delivered the following highlights on site:
57 National courses across coaching, safeguarding, medical and refereeing. Of these there were 34 coaching courses and 17 medical,
sports science and psychology courses delivered
1,021 coaches attended The FA Licesend Coaches Club Conferences, including over 400 Goalkeeper coaches who attended the first
However, whilst our first year has undoubtedly been a success, we are not resting on our laurels. Over the next 12 months we will
continually aim to improve the service we provide at St. Georges Park. We will utilise expertise across the facility to improve our course
content and delivery, meeting the needs of our ever changing game and the demands of both professional and grassroots football and
strive to provide excellent customer service in FA Learning.
We hope you enjoy your experience with FA Learning at St. Georges Park and we wish you every success this year.
With the opening of St. Georges Park, The FAs new national
football centre, set to provide a platform for the communication
of The Future Game vision, we hope that you can share the
philosophy and can help us deliver the changes at all levels of
football prompted by the Elite Player Performance Plan and
the Youth Development Review, encouraging a more technical
approach to developing English players.
Central to the message are the principles of creativity and
innovation, for both coaches and players, and a playing
philosophy based on quality passing, possession and building
play through the three thirds of the pitch. Out of possession, the
philosophy calls for a tactical approach to defending in which all
players contribute.
The Future Game vision is intended for the whole game, with the
same underpinning values applicable for coaches from grassroots
to elite level.
Jamie Houchen
Head of FA Learning
Playing philosophy
Out of possession:
A tactical approach to defending, in which all players contribute
A controlled, calculated and assertive approach when and
where necessary
Additionally, the playing philosophy actively encourages the
individualistic player. Players with varied and unique dribbling skills
and the dexterity to go past defenders, particularly in the finalthird, are fundamental to success in the future game.

The purpose of this diagram is to graphically represent the major coaching pathways that a learner
can follow on his/her formal learning journey in football. Whilst the arrows indicate an idea of the
most likely routes through the qualifications, they are by no means exhaustive and do not represent
every possible journey a learner can take. There is no one pathway which The FA can recommend
as the correct learning journey for each individual is specific to their context, history, knowledge
and understanding.

The aim of this course is to help candidates see how the Futsal
techniques and skills from the Beginners Guide to Coaching Futsal
course can be integrated into more game like activities. The course
will help candidates organise and deliver game related Futsal practices
based across the three core strands. This will be done utilising a
number of different coaching methods/techniques. It will also provide
candidates with an introduction to the structure of team play, the Laws
of Futsal and the role the game of Futsal can play in developing all of our
young players.

through the thirds of the pitch. Out of possession, the philosophy calls for a tactical approach
to defending in which all players contribute.
The Future Game, The FA Technical Guide for Young Player Development, outlines a philosophy

Medical pathway
Every player/ athlete at whatever level of sport should be able to participate in activity in a safe environment and with the reassurance
that their medical interests have not been overlooked. The Football Association Medical Department therefore strongly recommend that
whenever sports activity (competition or training) is taking place, an individual who has completed an appropriate first
aid course is in attendance.
The FA Basic First Aid for Sport course is a foundation sports first aid course and the recommended minimum qualification for any person
providing pitchside support of sports activities.
Sports first aiders must be able to respond quickly to the needs of a casualty on the field of play in order to identify injury or illness, recognise
specific signs and symptoms and provide appropriate treatment. The FA Medical Department has developed a suite of fit for purpose
courses for all individuals at all levels, courses that will enable the pitchside first aider to develop the appropriate knowledge and skills.

and is keen to share his ideas on this under-represented and fascinating area of
sports medicine. Dr Nick Webborn was Chief Medical Officer to GB Paralympics

The Orthteam group of surgeons are well known to most medical teams working
in sport as the go to group for shoulders, Elbows and hands/wrists. Their
expertise, their approachability and their own popular series of CPD classes have
extended their reputation well outside the North-West area where they operate.
In this masterclass they will also bring specialist upper limb therapists with them,
to give a comprehensive run-through of upper limb injury management.

The concept of altitude training has been recognised within sports performance as a
tool to improve aerobic capacity and endurance. Traditionally varying methods including
Live High, Train High LHTH and Live High Train Low LHTL have been utilised to obtain
improvements in athletic performance.
More recently however hypoxic training has been used in rehabilitation settings to reduce
the dynamic load of athletes whilst increasing physiological demand and provide the
necessary adaption from training to prevent deconditioning.
Additionally Intermittent Hypoxic Training IHT at altitude has been shown to increase
repeated sprint ability in multi-directional sports such as football and help maximise
power production whilst reducing training volume.
A masterclass into common foot and ankle conditions led by one of the countrys
leading ankle surgeons of elite athletes. Common foot and ankle conditions will
be covered with diagnostic techniques and surgical intervention. The session will
also include a hands on cadaveric session with foot and ankle specimens to allow
participants to get a true feel of the various pathologies covered in the talk.
Dr Steve Peters is the man behind Team GBs extraordinary success in cycling
at the London 2012 Olympics. Dr Steve Peters is a Consultant Psychiatrist
and University Senior Clinical Lecturer. He has now formed a group of Sports
Psychologists called Chimp Management based on his successful model for
performance management and is extending this into various sporting arenas.
Richard Hampton has led the football arm of this project and will talk about how
the famous Chimp model can be in various sports with an emphasis on football.
1 Day
During this one day workshop you will combine the theoretical concepts behind the
various methods of altitude training along with the practical application of various
protocols designed to maximise performance and rehabilitation in elite sport.

Building on the material at Level 3, this course looks at taking mental skills out onto the pitch in coaching sessions. The course is both
theoretical and practical and shows you how to design sessions that integrate mental skills (communication, imagery, goal-setting,
relaxation, focus) and give an added psychological return. Youll work in groups on a scenario (e.g. team losing focus and conceding late
goals) and deliver a practice to help to improve the team response.
