DELOREAN MOTOR COMPANY

Takeaways:
1. FACILITY LOCATION was not chosen after proper analysis
Factory Site in IRELAND
The factory's opening ceremonies in 1981 attracted IRA protesters
It was the middle of the Troubles between Catholics and Protestants
Facility had to be shut down several times out of concern for safety
Vendors wouldn't visit the war-torn city of Belfast
workforce at the factory was woefully inexperienced
The exchange rate between the pound and the dollar tanked - meaning his cars
were now $25,000 in the U.S. instead of $18,000 like the DMC-12's nearest
competitor, the Corvette.

2. PRODUCT DESIGN and DEVELOPMENT was not a result of coherent and

streamlined work of Giorgetti, Lotus Cars and DMC
The distinctive stainless steel DeLorean DMC-12

First prototype in 1976 but delayed production till 1981

Promised 0 to 60 in 8 seconds but took more than 10 seconds
Stainless steel body panels were an attractive design concept but car could not be
easily painted
Over weight at 900 pounds

3. Improper Quality Control

Speedometer, Tachometer, Signal Lights, Wind Shield Wipers, fuel gauges etc did
not work
Gull Wing doors Jammed, cooling systems leaked
4. No Cost Control in place
In efforts to raise more money for the struggling company, John DeLorean was
arrested in October of 1982 on drug trafficking charges.
Money was spent frivolously and on to many projects at a time
5. Lack of Leadership
Lost interest in dream project
Lack of involvement
Basically the company had bitten off quite a bit more than it could chew.
