Grade5

Topic: Classifying
Organisms: Chapter 3

Lesson 2: How do
we classify plants ?

Brief Lesson Description:

The lesson introduce the classification of the plants.
That includes the characteristic of plants. That divided
to two main characteristic of plan which are vascular
and nonvascular and how the plant reproduce. The
lesson give the students the opportunity to explore by
their hand the leaves that will help them to recognize
the concepts.
Performance Expectation(s):
Students who demonstrate understanding can:

Classify organisms can be classified on the basis of observable

characteristics. Students will sort/classify different living thing
using similar and different characteristics.

Describe why organisms belong to each group or cite evidence

about how they are alike or not alike

Specific Learning Outcomes:

- Learner will be able to recognize that plants can be classified based
on characteristics.
- Students will be able to identify the new concepts of the lesson to
analysis the information to use them for their activities
- Students will be able to recognize the concepts the
characteristics of plant to connect them with their prior
knowledge characteristics of animal

Narrative / Background Information

Prior Student Knowledge:

The teacher asked learner to bring a leaves from their homes, so

learners have a background about the lesson. The previous lesson was
focusing characteristic of animals. Know the focus will be on the
characteristic of plant which helps to scaffold students information.
Science & Engineering
Practices:
Analyzing :
Analyzing the information
in grade 5 builds on prior
experiences . That will
help them to link what
they had with what they
will have which increase
their expectation in their
daily life. By bring leaves
from their homes.

Disciplinary Core Ideas:

Crosscutting Concepts:

- Biogeology
The feature of plant make
them classified differently

System and system model.

Define the plant and the
characteristic of it. its critical
to recognize the
differentiation between the
plant size, color, shape

Engaging in Argument
from Evidence
Engaging in argument
from evidence that they
had from exploration in
grade 5 builds on prior
experiences
and progresses to
comparing ideas and
representations about the
classifying plants.

Possible Preconceptions/Misconceptions:
Some students may have a difficulty with understanding
the new concepts ( language difficulties ) . That lead to
have a misconception around the class. In addition,
some students have some difficulties with getting the
instruction. That make them asking to repeat the
questions many time which start a misbehavior around
the class.
LESSON PLAN 5-E Model

ENGAGE: Opening Activity Access Prior

Learning / Stimulate Interest / Generate
Questions:
The teacher asked learner to bring a leaves from their
homes so the teacher will start the lesson with have a
dissection with the learner about what why brought.
Clarification Statement:
- Who remember what MS Thecrayat asked you to
bring yesterday?
- From which part of organism the leaves related to?
- Why do you think MS Thecrayat asked you to bring
the leaves.
*Show me your leaves
- what was our pervious lesson?
- what do you think , today lesson will be about?
The teacher will show learner the learning objective
for the lesson.
EXPLORE: Lesson Description Materials Needed /
Probing or
The teacher will ask each group to observe the leaves that they
Brought. Then to write on the empty paper 3 main different
characteristic about the leaves. Students have 7 minutes to
explore the leaves. For example, if the leave is long, green,
have lots of veins.

EXPLAIN: Concepts Explained and Vocabulary

Defined:
The teacher will have the new vocabulary on the board

( PowerPoint)
And will have a discussion with learner about what they
wrote. The teacher will clarify the lesson and ask learner
if they have any questions.
Vocabulary:
Vascular : plants that have special tubes for carrying food and water to all its parts
Nonvascular : plants that do not have special tubes for carrying food and water to all its parts
Reproducer: Produce something very similar to (something else)

ELABORATE: Applications and Extensions:

Build our tree activity:
The teacher will give students a lined worksheet. At
exploring stage, she asked them to write 3 main
characteristic of the leaves. After they had the
transformation stage, the students have the opportunity
to rewrite the characteristic of plant with the
explanation. Then the teacher will ask students to stick
the leaves with the worksheet on the tree. Students will
work individually.
EVALUATE:
Formative Monitoring (Questioning / Discussion):
The teacher will give students a worksheet. They have
to finish it individually.

Appendix :
