Decide how the second is related to the first. After these there is a third shape, then an arrow and then five more shapes. On the left are some shapes and the codes that go with them. You must decide how the code letters go with the shapes. Then find the correct code for the test shape from the set of five codes on the right. Draw a circle round the letter under it. An example has been done for you, Look at Example 1: /\ F TEST SHAPE A &G A 4 G J F K /\ F a ® c d e Now decide what the code letters mean. F must mean a white triangle and G must mean a black triangle. So the test shape must have a G code and a circle has been drawn around b. Now look at Example 2: a Sx Teen (i) sy () sz TY TX st Tz © TZ @® b ce d e This time the codes have two letters. The first letter is the same for both shaded shapes, so S must be the code for shading and T the code for white. The second letter is different for each figure, so X, Y and Z must be the codes for arrow, square and diamond. Therefore the test shape must have an S code for shading and a Z code for diamond. So the answer is SZ and a circle has been drawn around a. Now do these practice questions. Remember there is a new code for each new question. Therefore, the scores your child obtains on these tests will not necessarily be a direct indication of their likely score on an actual selection test. Furthermore, the pass marks for the actual exams will depend, to some extent, on the overall standard of the candidates. Preparation for Testing Give the test to your child at an appropriate time when they are both physically and mentally alert. Choose a suitable area for them to work in ~ make sure they can work comfortably and are free from any distractions. Before your child takes a test, take some time with them to talk about the reasons they are doing the test. Also, explain that they might find some of the questions difficult, but that they should work as quickly and as carefully as they can. If they get stuck on a question they should not waste to0 much time on it, but move on to the next one. If they finish before the time limit, they can go back to it. Taking the Tests It is important that you choose the correct instructions below, either for a Multiple-Choice test ora Standard test (as marked on the front cover of the test booklet). Multiple-Choice Tests Answers are entered in the answer booklet provided ~ not on the test booklet. The answer booklet contains answer sheets for tests 11 to 11D for the three types of questions (Non-Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning). Assist your child in selecting the appropriate answer sheet in this booklet. The actual test would be marked by a computer, but for the purposes of a familiarization test you will need to score it yourself using the appropriate Answer Key at the end of these Notes for Parents. However, itis important for your child to treat it like the real thing and record an answer in the appropriate box by drawing a clear line through it with a pencil. Mistakes should be carefully rubbed out and NOT crossed out, since in the actual test this would not be correctly recorded by the computer. You can ignore the boxes at the top marked ‘Pupil’s Reg. No.’, ‘School No.’ and ‘Date of Birth’. These will need to be filled in only during the actual selection test, and are not necessary for this familiarization. When you mark the test, you might like to enter your child’s total number of correct answers in the box marked “Raw Score’ underneath ‘Test Results’. You can ignore ‘Standardized Score’, ‘Marker’s Initials’ and ‘Checker’s Initials’. By experiencing these details now, your child will be more familiar with the style of the actual paper when (s)he comes to sit it. Standard Tests Ask your child to fill in all the details as instructed on the front cover of the test booklet. Ignore the marking columns down the sides of the pages ~ these will be on the actual test paper and are used by the test markers. By experiencing all these details now, your child will be more familiar with the style of the actual paper when (s)he comes to sit it. Ways to Do the Test Session The tests have five separate sections. Each section is preceded by instructions on how to answer the questions, one or two examples and some practice questions. This is then followed by 12 test questions. In the actual exam, your child will have these instructions read aloud to him/her by the invigilaror. There are three main ways you can do this test at home: 1. With your child, urn to Section 1 of the test booklet. Read through the instructions at the top together. Then get them to do the practice questions, giving the answers when they have finished (see Answer Key). Finally, time them for six minutes on the following 12 questions. After six minutes have elapsed, stop your child unless they have not finished. If this is the case, draw a line underneath the question they are on, or draw a ring round its number, and then let them carry on until they have completed the 12 questions. When you come to mark the test you will know how many questions they got right in the time allowed, while they will also be allowed to attempt every single question. You will then have a good indication of whether they need to speed up their technique. Repeat this procedure for the other four sections. OR 2. Ask your child to read through the example in the first section themselves and then do the practice questions with you providing the answers (see Answer Key). (S)He can tell you when they are ready to begin the timed section. You would then time them for six minutes on the remaining 12 questions. OR 3. You can simply give the test to your child and ask them to read through it and complete it on their own with no help, involvement or timing on your part. In this case you will not be able to provide them with the answers to the practice questions until they have finished the whole test. You should also tell them to ignore any ‘Wait until you are told to go on’ instructions, Please note, if you want your child to experience the test as closely as possible to the real test, then you should choose Option 1. If you choose Option 1 you will need to follow the instructions carefully. Marking and Feedback ‘The answers are provided below. Only the answers given are allowed. One mark should be given for each correct answer. Do not deduct marks for wrong answers. Do not allow half marks or ‘the benefit of the doubt’. The results may suggest that more practice is needed. Remember, always try to be positive and encouraging, Talk through the mistakes your child has made in a non-condemnatory way ~ work out together how to get the right answer.
