Thisyearasresidents,wegettheextraordinaryexperienceofhavingdistrict

observerscomeintoobserveusandgothroughtheprocessofEETbeforewe
areofficiallycertified.Wehavetheopportunitytoplanlessons,participatein
preconferencesandpostconferenceswithpeoplefromthedistrictwhogiveus
valuablefeedbackthatwillbenefitusinourfirstyearofteaching.Wegettohave
twoformalobservationsaswellasoneinformalobservation.Formyfirstformal
observation,Ichosetotrysomethingcompletelynew.NotonlydidIdoascience
lesson,butitwasmyfirstSTEMsciencelessonwherethekidswereoutsidefor
thefirsttimeusingballoonrockets.IknowI'mcrazy.Igotalittleexcitedandtried
tointroducetoomanynewthingsatonce,butIreflectedonthiswithmyobserver
andweagreedthatit'sgoodtohavealessonnotturnouthowIoriginallywanted
becausethenhowwouldshegivemefeedback.Thelessonstartedoutgreat.I
toldthekidsweweregoingtoyellataballoonandmakeitmove,soweyelled.
ThenIshouted,"Waitsomethingisn'tright!Wemusthavetouseourmagicmind
powerstomakeitmove!"Sothat'swhatwedid,andtheballoonstilldidn'tmove.
Ithenaskedthekidswhatweweredoingwrong,howintheworldwerewe
supposedtomakethisballoonmove.Theywereabletotellmethatweneededto
pushairintoitanduseaforce.Fromthere,everythingwentdownhill.WhenIwas
modelinghowtoblowuptheballoon,itpoppedanditsentachildintoa
meltdown.OneofthereasonsIfeeltheobjectivewasn'tmetisthatIchosean
activitythatreallywouldhaveworkedbetterwithfifthgraders.Evenmyobserver
hadaskedifIwaslookingatafifthgradestandard.Wetalkedaboutlooking
deeperintothestandardsandhowforfirstgrade,forceandmotionisverybasic
andisthebasisforunderstandingofthefollowinggrades.Iwasjustmakingit
toocomplex!However,shecommendedmeonbeingbraveandsteppingoutof
thebox.Shetoldmemystrengthsweremyprocedures,myrelationship/
communitywiththekids,andthefactthateventhoughmylessonwasnothing
likeIplanned,Ididnotshowthepanictomykids,Ijustkeptcalmandkepttelling
themthatscientistshavetogowiththeflowandmakechanges!Myfavorite
strengthofminethatshetoldmeaboutwasthefactthatIwassweet,butnottoo
sweet.Whenmystudentwentintothemeltdownoverthepoppedballoon,I
apologizedandtriedtomakehimlaugh,butIdidnotcompletelystopthelesson
andwipehistears.
