ADVENT BRINGS SPECIAL WORSHIP EVENTS

The season of Advent begins this Sunday, November 29. Encompassing the four Sundays before
Christmas, Advent is a season of preparation to celebrate the birth of Jesus. With the season comes a
number of special Worship events.
Sunday, November 29, is the Hanging of the Greens. Part of our 10:15 AM Worship Service will
be devoted to celebrating and consecrating the many Advent-Christmas symbols that will decorate
our sanctuary for the season. This will be a wonderful morning of song and celebration.
Sunday, December 13, is our Christmas Cantata. Our choir has been and continues to prepare to
present the Christmas story in music and song at our 10:15 AM Worship Service. This is an event not
to be missed.
Thursday, December 24, at 7 PM is our Christmas Eve Service. We will celebrate the coming of
the Christ child with scripture, music, song and proclamation. More details are to come in future
issues of the Caller.
Come, let us prepare for the coming of the Christ child through the season of Advent.

ADVENT BRINGS TEMPORARY CHANGE TO OUR ORDER OF WORSHIP

The Advent season brings a change in our Worship Service. Since we will be lighting an
Advent Candle each Sunday morning, the liturgy of Introduction, Scripture Reading and Prayer
around the Advent Candle will take the place of our normal Invocation, Lord's Prayer and Gloria
Patri. We will return to our usual Order of Worship after the Advent Season.

Recipes Wanted!
Everyone has a favorite
recipe - it's the one your friends
ask you for or the one your grandmother used
to make for you when you were a kid. Well,
we want to share those recipes! As a
fundraiser to support the Hospitality Team, we
will put everyone's favorites into a collection of
good eats! You can submit your recipe by
sending it via email to lschaffell@earthlink.net
or put it in the small basket on the Coffee Cart
on Sunday. If you have a story to share, add
that as well. Knowing the background makes
it special and adds even more interest. We will
be collecting these for a few weeks, I hope you
will take the time to write it down and submit
it. Thank you for supporting us!

Case of the Missing Choir Chimes

We opened one of the boxes of choir
chimes yesterday and someone has borrowed
(I hope versus stolen) 7 of the choir chimes
plus the locking bar is missing. I've already
checked with Marguerite and she doesn't have
them. Do you know of anyone else that might
have borrowed them? From the bells that are
missing it looks like it was the middle register
and they could have been used to play a
simple hymn. Unfortunately it's been quite a
while since we opened the box so I have no
idea of how long they've been missing. I'm
pretty sure they were not stolen as they would
have taken both boxes.
If you can shed any light on where the
missing chimes might be, please let me know.

Theres Still Room for You!

The Advent/Christmas/Epiphany
study of the Parlor Class, Meeting
the Messiah, begins this Sunday morning at 9
A.M. in the Chapman Lounge. The cost of the
book is $14, which can be paid on Sunday, or
later if necessary. We have one new person,
Minde Findley planning to join us for this new
course of study. There is still room for YOU!
This study will involve shared reflections each
Sunday using the devotional and Biblical
material appointed for that day, plus
reflections on the daily readings from the week
past. This will not be the case on this first
Sunday, November 29, since there are no daily
readings for the period between November 22
and November 28. The readings begin with the
first day of Advent, which is this coming
Sunday. Dont worry, though, the members of
this group are never at a loss for
words, including many very insightful words
that come to mind as we react to the material
in the book we are studying and interact with
each other!

Thanksgiving Offering
Goes Well Over Goal
With the gifts
received this past Sunday the 2015
Thanksgiving Offering now totals $1109. This
exceeds our goal of $875.00 by $234. We are
very grateful to every individual and family
who participated in the 2015 Thanksgiving
Offering which support students in Disciples
Colleges, Universities and Seminaries! Thanks
for your generosity! The Outreach Ministry

A Gospel Christmas
Ed Linberg has now
sold 21 tickets for A Gospel
Christmas to be presented by the
Mountainside Master Chorale on Saturday,
December 12 and Sunday, December 13 at First
Christian Church, Pomona.
The Saturday night concert begins at 7:30 P.M
while the Sunday afternoon concert begins at
3:30 P.M. The tickets are good for either concert.
We have the group rate of $10 per ticket, so if
youre interested speak to Ed by Sunday,
December 6th to get your ticket(s) for this
concert. Cash is fine. Checks should be made
payable to: Mountainside Master Chorale. Lots
of favorite Christmas songs are planned for
this concert, all of which have a jazz or gospel
beat to them. In other words, it will be a
concert of good toe-tapping music.

An Invitation
Ed Zeliff, a fine pianist and composer,
who has entertained our Sr. Adults twice in
2015, invites members of our congregation to
attend a special musical program at the La
Habra United Methodist Church, 631 N. Euclid
Street in La Habra, at 3 P.M. on Sunday,
December 6. Entitled Joyful Noel, this
program will feature a Youth Symphony
Orchestra, Musique Sur La Mer, directed by
Marcy A. Sudock, with Mary Sue Gee,
Soprano. A special guest, Santa Claus, will
read The Night Before Christmas. Theres a
photo op with Santa 30 minutes before the
performance. Admission is free, though
freewill donations will be appreciated. If youd
like a rich musical experience a week from
Sunday, you are urged to consider this
invitation.

Call for Warm Clothing

The Outreach Committee is
renewing the call for usable warm
clothing to again distribute once a month at
our Hot Meal Ministry. Items most in need,
especially during the cold winter months, are
coats, sweaters, jackets, sweatshirts, pants,
scarfs, hats, socks, gloves, shoes, etc. Also, if
you have an extra umbrella or two, they will be
put to good use and will be very much
appreciated since major El Nino storms are
expected to hit our area very soon. All Items
may be dropped off in an area that will be
designated in the Narthex starting this coming
Sunday, November 29 and every Sunday
thereafter. Please see me if you have any
questions regarding this much needed and
very worthy project. If you would be willing
to come on one of the first Wednesdays of any
month and help with distribution, please
contact me, your help will be greatly
appreciated.
Thank you, Phil Forbes

Distribution of Tri-Tip Project

Funds
During its meeting this
past Wednesday night, the members of the
Outreach Ministry, together with several
volunteers from the team that conducted the
2015 Tri-Tip Project who provided
written in-put about the distribution of the
funds generated by this project and/or were
physically present for this portion of the
meeting, made this distribution of the funds.
A total of $10,235 was generated in
total sales this year. It was decided to keep
$1,235 of this amount in reserve to cover the
start-up costs for the 2016 Tri-Tip Project and
to distribute $9,000. This is the list of the
ministries supported by the 2015 Tri-Tip
Project together with the amount to be
distributed to each of them.
FCC Scholarship Fund $1,500
Hot Meal Ministry $1,500
FCC Kitchen Fund $1,000
5

Habitat for Humanity of Orange

County $1,000
Loch Leven Conference Grounds
$1,000
Week of Compassion $1,000
Career Wise $500
CROP Hunger Walk $500
Heifer International $500
Whatever it Takes $500
All of these ministries are familiar to
our members with the exception of Career
Wise and Whatever it Takes. The former is a
relatively new ministry that is focused on
providing training and support to help
homeless persons find employment. They are
based in Brea. The latter is Whatever it Takes, a
fund administered by the Fullerton
Collaborative to help with the needs of the
homeless (bus tickets, partial rent, etc. that is
not covered by the traditional non-profits.
We thank all of our volunteers who worked on
the Tri-Tip Project in 2015. We are especially
grateful to our three Coordinators, each of
whom led a team of volunteers once a month
between April and October. Our Coordinators
were Craig Wallace, Barry Woodbridge and
Donna Woodbridge. These three people
volunteered to meet with representatives of
Casa de Oracin to represent our congregation
on the Task Force that will work out a plan for
their sharing in the Tri-Tip Project again in
2016. In 2015, Casa de Oracin covered the TriTip Project on seven 4th Thursdays of the
month and two of the three 5th Thursdays
which fell between April and October. Casa de
Oracin used the earnings from their
involvement with the Tri-Tip Project to put on
their October 31 Festival event. The Task Force
will develop a proposal about the 2016 Tri-Tip
Project for presentation to the Outreach
Ministry during its first meeting of 2016, set for
January 20th.

An Additional
Alternative Way of Giving
Four weeks ago on Nov. 1, we held
our annual Alternative Gift Faire on the plaza.
That event generated almost $9,000 for 20 plus
participating ministries, most of which are in
our area, such as our Hot Meal Ministry and
Pathways of Hope, while several reach out to
people around the world, e.g. Church World
Service and Heifer International. Pathways of
Hope has suggested that we consider giving
the gift of joy. They suggest several
alternative ways of giving. They include:
Adopt a Guest, Provide Food for the Hungry
and the Community Holiday Program. Check
out the flier youll find on the bulletin board. It
will give you the details for being part of one
of these alternative options for giving. The
Adopt a Guest giving option needs to be
completed by December 15, 2015.
Did you see the newsletter of
Pathways of Hope on the table in the narthex?
It has a story about our own Jerry and Jackie
Brown and how they give to support Pathways
of Hope. They took a good picture for the
newsletter as well!

We Get Letters . . .
In a letter dated
November 12, Saundra Bryant, Executive
Director of All Peoples Community Center in
Los Angeles thanked us for our quarterly gift
of $187.50 which we gave in early Nov. for the
fourth quarter of 2015. This excerpt is taken
from her letter:
This year All Peoples has
implemented two new programs bringing
additional services to the community. In July
we became a Visitation Center for the
Department of Children and Family Services.
Parents now have safe, supervised visits with
their children while they are working towards
reunification of their family. Our second
program is a collaborative partnership to
provide educational workshops for parents
about the cycle of domestic violence. The full
letter from Saundra is posted on the bulletin
board.
A letter of thanks for our support of
Church World Services Blanket Project, which
we held in August was received along with a
letter from the Rev. John McCullough,
President and CEO of CWS. Here are some
examples of how CWS blankets were used
earlier this year according to his report:
210 lightweight blankets were sent to
Mexico to partner Emigrant Safety and Service.
90 heavyweight blankets went to
Riverdale, Illinois to Reach Out Ministries Inc.
for distribution to homeless in the area.
210 heavyweight, 180 lightweight and
40 baby blankets to Sisters of Hope
Community in Garrett, Kentucky for
distribution to homeless and economically
disadvantaged in the area in response to spring
flooding.
Both the letter, as well as a certificate
from CWS, and the full distribution report for
January through June, 2015 are posted on the
bulletin board. Look for these pieces of
correspondence, and know, that our giving
makes a difference in the lives people in
California and around the world!

Summary of November
Outreach Ministry Meeting
At its November meeting, the
Outreach Ministry reviewed a number of
Outreach projects from recent months as well
as ones which are coming up in December and
on into 2016. Heres a summary
of our meeting
1. Determined the distribution of the
$9,000 generated through the 2015 Tri-Tip
Project, as reported in last weeks issue of The
Caller, and made plans for this project in
2016.
2. Received a report on the November
1 Alternative Gift Faire from Co-Coordinators
Mary Anne Richmond and Jill Scott, whose
work was greatly assisted by Donna
Woodbridge. The event generated almost
$9,000, not as much as last year, unfortunately,
but we had a higher per capita participation
with fewer donors than in 2014. The 2016 AGF
has been set for Sunday, November 6th.
3. Received a report from Phil Forbes,
Coordinator, that the Hygiene Kits and Bibles
he has available to people who come to the Hot
Meal Ministry on the first Wednesday of each
month when our congregation hosts this
activity, continue to be going well. A new
supply of Hygiene Kits has been ordered in
anticipation of the demand for them in both
December and January. We also approved
Phils proposal that we resume distributing
clothing at the monthly Hot Meal Ministry.
Look for more information about this project
elsewhere in this issue.
4. Learned that a small group from
Casa de Oracion and from FCC, Fullerton will
visit an orphanage in Tijuana on Saturday,
January 23rd to explore how our two
congregations might get involved in
supporting this ministry. Phil Forbes and Craig
Wallace volunteered to represent FCC in this
activity. Wed like at least 1 more person, 2 at
the most, to be part of this trip representing us.
If this is of interest to you, please speak to Ed
Linberg right away so you can be added to the
group going to Tijuana on 1/23. Anyone going
7

to Tijuana needs a passport for crossing the

border.
In addition, it was reported that the
proposal to continue the Global Ministries
Task Force with Casa de Oracion through 2016
will be acted upon at the Annual Meeting on
November 22.
5. Diane Daughtery and Sue Harless,
Coordinators of Decembers Mitten Tree
Project, reported on the plans theyve made for
this annual activity. Look for more information
about this project in this issue of The Caller
and be sure to bring in donations of socks,
scarves, gloves, hats, etc. etc. this coming
Sunday for the initial distribution which is set
for Wednesday, December 2nd following
the Hot Meal Ministry in Fellowship Hall.
6. We were reminded by Donna
Woodbridge, Coordinator, about the Christmas
Card Project for our sister churches in Japan.
Signatures on the cards will be welcomed on
November 29th as the cards need to be mailed
soon thereafter to arrive before Christmas.
7. Christmas Offering Coordinator, Ed
Linberg, announced that the goal for the
Christmas Offering, which benefits the
Regional Church, is $1,120, an increase of 5%
over last years Christmas Offering which
totaled $1,066.00. This offering will be received
on December 13 and 20.
8. Initial plans were discussed for the
2016 Souper Bowl of Caring event, set for
February 7th. Once again, the Youth of our
congregation will be asked to take the lead in
this project under the direction of P.J. Vannoy.
9. Chairman, Ed Linberg, reported
that the proposal of the Outreach Ministry to
increase the percentage of our income set aside
for Outreach Giving to 12%, from the 10%
figure it has been for many years now, has
been reviewed by the Stewardship Ministry. In
light of anticipated income, the percentage to
go to Outreach causes in 2016 will remain at
10% unless we receive more estimates of
giving than we have at present. This matter
will be reviewed in 2016 in light of our income
as it materializes in the new year.

10. Members were given the

opportunity to indicate their willingness to
serve on the Outreach Ministry in 2016. Those
present who indicated they would continue to
serve included these persons:
Phil Forbes, Mary Ann Richmond, Jill Scott,
Craig Wallace, Laura Lee Wiggins and Donna
Woodbridge. Michael Shepherd a new member
of the Outreach Ministry, the nominee to serve
as Chairman in 2016, will also serve. First time
participant with the Outreach Ministry in
November, Lori Allbrecht, also indicated she
will serve with this group next year. It is
anticipated that most of the other current
members of the Outreach Ministry will also
choose to continue to serve in 2016. They either
had to leave our meeting early or were absent.
If you would like to be part of the work of the
Outreach Ministry, speak to Michael Shepherd
who was elected to Chair this ministry in 2016
at the November 22nd Annual Meeting.
Our meeting concluded with
expressions of gratitude from Ed Linberg,
Outreach Ministry Chair for the past three
years2013, 2014 and 2015--to all of the
members of the group for their work, not only
in 2015, but over the last several years. The
members of the Outreach Ministry for 2015
included these persons: Diane Daugherty, Phil
Forbes, Sue Harless, Randy Langston, Mary
Ann Richmond, Jill Scott, Ben and Julie Stuart,
P. J. Vannoy, Craig Wallace, Laura Lee
Wiggins and Donna Woodbridge, who served
as our Secretary. The Outreach Ministry will
not meet in December. Their first meeting of
2016 is set for Wednesday, January 20th at 7
P.M. in Chapman Lounge.

Mitten Tree
We are still collecting hats, scarves, socks, mittens and gloves for the Mitten Tree
that will be in the Narthex during the month of December.
Each Wednesday during December we will give out
approximately 40 tickets at the Hot Meal on Wednesday nights and the recipients in turn will come
over to the Sanctuary building and choose an item from the tree. Look for the Christmas box on the
table in the Narthex. If you would like to volunteer an hour or so anytime during the month of
December, please get in touch with Sue Harless and/or Diane Daugherty who are the coordinators
of this project.

Share your card

Again this year, you are invited to cut costs and bring a card to hang on
the garland in the Narthex during the month of December. You only have to
send one card, save lots of postage and at the same time, let everyone in the congregation know that
you are thinking of them. Lets see if we can fill the Narthex with cards.

Reminder to Save Campbell Soup Labels

With the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons upon us, more of us will be
entertaining and that means more Campbells Soup cans being opened.
The Disciples Women (Betty Rollo is our coordinator) ask that you continue to save your
Campbell product bar codes from the label on the cans or just bring the whole label and Betty will cut
out the bar code. Bring them to church and deposit in the silver box on the counter in Donnas office.
These labels are sent to Woodhaven Home for the developmentally disabled in Jefferson City, MO
Here are some of the products in addition to Campbell Soup labels that you can save:
Pepperidge Farms breads, crouton, rolls and stuffing, frozen puff pastry, turnovers, garlic
breads, cakes, BIC pens (all kinds) , highlighters, dry erase markers, Prego, V8, Pace, Goldfish,
Dannon Products, Glad, Post cereals (all kinds) Thanks for your assistance with this worthwhile
project.

Established: 1899; Address: 1-17-10 Kawadaira Aoba-ku, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture 981-0954 JAPAN
About the church: Located in Sendai City (population 1 million), this church was started by the Disciples of
Christ, USA. The church was not damaged during the disaster. The present pastor is a fresh graduate from seminary. He
has been ministering since April 2014.
Prayer Concerns: That we can share in the joy of worship with all the people who come on Sundays. That
through the ministry of our Sunday School many children will be led to church.
Iizaka Church, (no kindergarten) Pastor: Rev. Toshihisa Suzuki, Membership: 5
Established: 1888; Address: 17-6 Aza-Kaminaka Kawahara, Iizaka-cho, Fukushima-shi, Fukushima Prefecture 960-0201
JAPAN
About the church: Iizaka is a town known for its hot springs. In the past many great leaders came out of this
church, but now the flame of Christian presence in the community is small. The small church is supported by Rev.
Suzuki from the neighboring Kawamata Church. This year they decided to do something new in worship by planning a
musical worship. Six out of eight of our members in attendance were able to participate by providing some music for the
worship. This was a very blessed time for us.
Prayer Concerns: All of the church members are elderly. We pray that they will continue in health, and be able
to attend worship on Sundays. We pray that young people will come to church, and that we will be able to pass on the
faith to the next generation.
Aizu Wakamatsu Church, (pronounced I-zoo wah-kah-mah-tsoo), (no kindergarten)
Pastor: Rev. Katsuro Yaegashi; Membership: 36; Established: 1891; Address: 9-20 Miyamachi Aizu-Wakamatsu City,
Fukushima Prefecture 965-0801 JAPAN
About the church: Aizu Wakamatsu is the largest city in Aizu (population 125,000.) Aizu is the part of
Fukushima which has many mountains and is far from the coast. It is a rural community, with many rice fields. Though
not as high as other areas, the Aizu area also received high levels of radiant after the nuclear disaster. People for other
areas with higher radiation have evacuated to Aizu Wakamatsu. The church proudly carries on in the tradition of the
congregational church. Rev. Yaegashi used to be a high school teacher for many years. After retirement he entered
seminary, and just graduated this year. He came to the church in Wakamatsu April of this year.
Prayer Concerns: We aim to be the kind of church that values each individual, and seeks to love our neighbors.
And that we will be an open and inviting church, serving society and committed to social issues

faith-building community, and passion-powered service
to our neighborhood and to the world.
Where encounters with God are not only ordinary,
theyre extraordinary!
Where invitations not only happen on occasion,
they happen on every occasion.
Where not only minds grow in knowledge,
hearts grow in faith.
Where hands not only give to the needy,
they serve the least of these
