What's your name?
Many people hate them and many people love them but no one gets to choose the name
that they are given, Names are something that can define a person and that shape others opinion
ofa person even before they meet that person. There are many different practices for naming that
vary across cultures. Naming conventions vary greatly from the family first names to changing
one's lapame upon masage ‘Some naming conventions that may seem normal in one culture
may fem taboo to other cultures.
/ In the United States the naming conventions are pretty standard throughout the country.
ne of the most well know naming conventions in the United States is the surname. In families
the surname is normally the same. Upon marriage most wives will take the groom’s surname
although, this is quickly changing because of women wanting to keep their last name for

Many individuals first names come from previous family members, whether the name came from
‘a favorite grandmother or an important father figure; there are many people that are juniors,
thirds, and fourths.
Inmy family there are two main naming conventions that are followed. Throughout the
generations, all of the women have taken their husband’s names and have their maiden names asJessick 2
their middle names. The other naming convention that my family follows is having a family
name. The name Lee is found throughout my mother’s and father’s side of the family. My
sister's, grandmothers, both of my great-grandfather’s middle names are all Lee and my aunt's
first name is Lee as well. My father and I also share the middle name Andrew.
‘A name is something that a person is known as, something that they are referred to as for
their entire life. Many people are often known by their surnames for being relates to others.
Naming is an important practice that covers all cultures. There are many different naming
conventions and practices about naming that are followed across the world and each of them
have a very important reason and impact behind them.
